looking at a 88 escudo. how do these older ones compare to the likes of the 1991-93 models? I think the 88 is a 1.6 8v carb, how do these go compared to the more common 16v injected engines? wouldnt have a clue of it has a LSD in it and by reading some of the threads it may just be pot luck!
They're awesome we trucks. Mate just sold his 89 carbed vitara that he had for 10 years and the only big problem he had was breaking a diff mount on the front one. Picked up a new front diff for $120 so not that bad. Also the carbed ones are abit more reliable than the newer EFI ones like I have. Hope that helps.
they are a good little truck but they have weak front diffs , ive blown 6 now but since welded rear diff it has been alright, carbed ones are a bit down on power but still go good , have a look on cheap vitara lift and you will see what they can do for little money. vaughan
Just check, but if its an escudo you'll probably find it's the 8 valve throttle-body injected motor. NZ Vitaras ran carbs in the base-spec JX model for years after everyone else was injected.
The 8-valve is down on power compared to the 16-valve, but some people consider it a much better proposition for 4WD because of the better torque characteristics. I run the 8-valve TBI and love it.
