not really, they still are useful, have seen one being used to extract a rolled Suzuki where it was not really possible to get another truck/winch in........how would you pull yourself sideways with an electric winch?

yeah i guess, i hadn,t seen on b4, that lever seemed to be flexing a little winching it out of a small mudhole
if another person was driving, it would help of course.
i pull dead 4x4 atv,s on the back of the truck using a small block and tackle, pretty slow but works too,
so would a highlift jack
the winch guys do pull themselfs right way up with electric winch.

Nothing wrong with a tirfor when you've got no other way of getting unstuck

I used my tirfor not long ago to right an upside down Terrano. Would have been a right mission trying to do it with an electric winch because of the angle of pull.
It is the one piece of recovery equipment I never leave home with out. It can winch up / down / left / right and backwards.
Plus is still winch's when the battery's are flat, engine stalled and all my mates 4x4s are not around.
Takes a while to get anywhere and is hard work , but faster than a high lift winch and better than being stuck
