1989 surf

inherited a 1989 surf ifs front, engine taken for another vehicle so no engine.
whats the cheapest and easiest engine to chuck in to get going and isnt going to cause headaches mating up to gearbox

nope its a diesel and people want silly money, i want an alternative, i should have said that in the origional post but i didnt think anyone would say what you did

3y, 4y, 5mge or 6mge. All easy as to fit. All will require a reasonable amount of work. The 2 y series engines were standard 4cyl petrol engines for this model, but don't know if they are direct replacement or not. The m series engines are the tried and proven supra conversion, best bang for buck you will get (but they are getting a bit old now, and you need to find a manual bell housing for one, rare as rocking horse shit). If you want to spend more the sky is your limit. (I have an SS commodore donk in mine). But as you stated that you wanted easy and cheap, you are best to look at standard engines that came in that model.

i have a 5mgeu block and couldnt be happier, true that the bellhousings are tough to find. but worth it!
