A functioning brain, don't spin wheels excessively as it results in unecessary water holes and stops others using it in future.

Otherwise, its not a difficult track if its been dry. If its wet, well its a bit more fun. Stay away from the loop at the end (or have some experienced and well set-up helpers with you - be prepared to be there for some time). You will need some armour.

Just the track straight up to the top and turn around at the Tairua River all you need in this weather is A/T's, a good snatch strap, tow hooks and another vehicle with you.

If your thinking of doing the loop, thats another story, you will need a winch, mud tyres and spare parts/repair equipment. I would also take food and water for an over night stay on the track. Its hard going even in the middle of summer
