just another case of blaming the biggest thing you see on your property. :x

why the hell would a 4wd owner want to steal hundreds of sheep

its always going to be the way.

we are using the biggest vehicle and therefore get remembered the most. followed by motorbikes and mountain bikes.

what folks don't realise is that because we have bigger vehicles, we do simple things like pack out all our rubbish as opposed to other user groups just leaving it on the ground etc etc etc

its a public road so therefore we should be able to use it.

if you wanted to use it, then get hold of someone like Peter Vahrey and discuss the best and legal way to approach it.

why Peter :?:

however the best legal way - is to cut the lock off and report the illegal closure to the police. :D

A farmer needs local authority permission to put a gate across a road - then it has to have a sign saying that it is a public road (that includes any so called paper roads) and it must not be locked.

his is the first name that came into my head of somebody who has experience in these issues, which is why I made that suggestion.

With his knowledge, he may have a solution to this, without resorting to confrontational tactics like cutting locks

if you know of anyone else, or have any brighter solutions then feel free

this is of course a public forum, and I am just making folk aware of people out there that can help in a non confrontational way that could resovle access issues that we may have. 8) 8)

it appears to me that the solution to the problem of people doing damage to property is not to do more damage to it ie; cutting locks.

by all accounts the farmers sound reasonable and maybe if you wanted to go drive there you should, sit down over a cuppa or cold one and discuss the matter, including ground rules of where and where you can't go and what you can and can't do

There is no reasonable solution to someone breaking the law - the Council and Police should have ripped the gate off as soon as they became aware of it - you simply can not block a persons free right to go along a legal road - end of story. Regarding loss of stock and hoons going on their land - I live in a rural area and they have my sympathy - however it is down to their own fencing and boundary notices etc.

have a look at

Public roads are the cornerstone of freedom

and this what happened when a Local Counselor got fed up with a neighboring Council allowing a road to be illegally blocked

Skid, thanks for thinking of me but there are lots sources of good information out there about roads now. The first move is to talk with the local Council and let them know the legal road is blocked by a locked gate. A gate is permitted if it is not locked and advised to the Council. I personally agree that cutting locks should not be the first action but if you are sure of the facts that the gate is actually on the legal alignment and the Council refuse to act, then may be the time to cut.... preferably in the company of the local constable.

Went for a look up Coal Pit Rd this evening. Sense has prevailed - the gate is now padlock free :)

The sign erected by the landowner(s) remains however.. this could lead some to believe this public road is out of bounds

Some pics taken further up the road. This one looking out over the Crown Terrace with Arrowtown hidden in the distance
