steering swivel seal on safari front axle

Post by muskie »

my swivel seal is leaking oil and i will need to rectify a.s.a.p, on my old landrovers and range rovers we used to put in a graphite cv joint grease rather than oil to stop future leakage ( this was the recommended repair by landrover uk themselves ).

is there a easy way round on the saf? or is it strip down and replce?, in the past on land rovers, i have cut the seal and fitted useing silicone sealer placing the cut at the top as an easy and quick way round which worked without any problems, on the safari i have never done one, so what and how have you guys done them? looks like a big stripdown job so if there is an easier way i would like to know..thanks

Hi If its leaking oil from the swivel hub its more likely the axel seal leaking, Piece of cake to do about 30 min a side,

Just replaced the axle seals on mine. You need seal number 34 44 10 twin lip. Any seal shop will have them. Make sure you clean the oil out of your CV and re-pack it with grease. You will need about 3 litres of diff oil to top up your diff. Do both sides, if one is leaking, the other will be leaking soon.

excellent thanks guys, havent got a seal shop local so ordered that seal size from repco, $13 each, happy with that so got 2. however 30 mins a side was a bit optimistic for me, took me that long to jack up, take wheel off and position axle stands  took me around 2.5 hours by the time i had repacked cv joint and bearings, it was the first time i have done one on a saf. thanks again.

hey i thought they were oil but the cv's are packed with grease and the oil that leaks comes from the axle which is seperated from the cv housing via a seal (the one which needs replacing) very good idea actually, well better than rangies and landies which i always owned back in the uk. its an easy job once you have done one side, just a bolt undoing exercise really. if you jack one side up at a time you wont lose any oil as it tips the oil into the diff housing. :D
