Theft prevention measures?

Hi, I'm a new owner of a '95 Safari. I'm debating how to make this car harder to steal - it is currently a stock-standard.
I'm personally not a big fan of car alarms, and so my thinking at the moment is a hard-to-find kill switch and the club.
I imagine that the combination would be as effective as an immobiliser, and less complex.
Any thoughts??
Thanks
Jan

The first thing you can do is leave the transfer case in neutral.
If it's a diesel put a hidden switch on the fuel-cut solenoid wire.. it will crank but never start. Simple.

Classic!... I'm thinking about getting the Navy seals or glass in the face and metal pole option for my truck

Perhaps a stupid question, but can you explain why this would be a good thing?
How about means of blocking access to the engine compartment - locking down the hood? Anyone using anything designed for that?
Cheers,
J

Clubs are a waste of time. Saw a doco on car theft a few years ago, showed a dude with a hacksaw remove a club in less that half a minute, easy as.... Same with removeable steering wheels which seem too be a hit with the ricers at the moment. A decent set of vicegrips make a useable temporary steering wheel.... Kill switches would be the go

i don't think there is anything that scum bums can't get around. I think the key is time, the longer it takes them the better chance you have of keeping your pride and joy. Myself (not so much the truck, but my car) its a combination of everything, and picking where i park it is probably the biggest part. If someone really wants it then it may happen but thief's are lazy if they see my car up the drive and they have to break into 5 other alarmed cars to get them out of the way to get to mine , there is a good chance that my gun safe will be unlocked by then, same car parked on the side of a dark street would be gone in minutes. You will never be 100 % safe but reducing the risk is the key (very paranoid) every time i lock my pride and joy i think how easy (or hard) it would be to steal, if i think its to easy then i might take my leads with me or just not park there at all.

Battery Isolation switch has always worked for me.
When the big red propriety key is in my pocket , they would have to find the switch location and then figure out all the wiring in order to bypass it.
Having said that, if they really want it ,there is nothing you can do to stop them taking it, sort of high tensile chain to fixed anchors in the ground.
For general parking around town , I have to agree with Wopass about a dog with big teeth, I don't even bother locking my truck half the time , its her second kennel and she is not going to let anyone in .

One concept I've always liked is a fuel shut off, theres little you can do thats really going to stop a determined theif from overcoming your security measures but once they get 100m down the road and run out of fuel they arent looking so descrete then and draw a bit of attention to themselves trying to work out why the cars stopped in the middle of the road or even better in the middle of an intersection
At the end of the day you arent going to stop them but if you can get them out of their comfort zone a bit then all the better
As for kill switches, I had an old falcon ute 20 years ago that didnt lock and any key would start it, I just used the heater switch (the heater was missing) as a kill swich, nobody would think of turning the heater on to start the thing

Most thieves in a hurry wouldn't figure out why they have no gears when they go to drive off. I've even caught mates out at work by putting the tranny in neutral, takes longer than you would think for them to pick up on why they aren't going anywhere

just pull out your ignition fuse and the bastards cant get it to start. it will try and try and try to start with no start!!! draws a whole ton of attention and then if they really want it they have to find the fuse box and and have to then have a fuse to put in.
Works on both petrol and diesel trucks and cars.
learned this from my mates with evo's and other performance cars.
also works on my 88 surf.

A simple relay hidden in series with your starter motor switch wire. Cheapest and easiest by far.
Loud Siren in the car that only works if its switched on via a door switch. Turn it on at nights and its like an alarm but won't go off when a truck goes past and shake a car fitted with a normal alarm that has a shcok sensor.
A timer in circuit so you can turn it off before it makes a noise,(hidden switch).
I like that option the best. The alarm will only go off if door is opened and will deafen the bastard at the wheel.
After a few thefts of belongings from my cars that I work hard for,I thought this up and I reckon its a go'er....

I had some bastard steal my cb aerial a month ago. I'm planning on fitting a kill switch in the injection pump fuel cut-out wire and hiding the switch somewhere. Wopass has got the right idea though

Encasing the entire truck in concrete is probably the best option

unless they decide to steal the 10 ton block of concrete

actually if its a nissan encasing it in concrete is probably the best thing for it....
Look at an alarm and a cutout switch, if you have gear in the back make up some lockable boxes, Theft is something always at the back of my mind with the prado when its out of the locked garage.....always careful where I park it etc, the Zuk is less of an issue as it looks pretty plain and is alarmed etc. the downside to an alarm is if you get it wet etc offroad then that may cause issues leaving you stranded etc

Ive got dark tinted windows int he back of my surf...that way its pretty much impossible to see anything ive got in the back.
Ive also got no "brand" type stickers advertsing all the cool "stealable " stuff in the vehicle....its pay to not advertise what you have in ya vehicle

Whatever you decide also stick a large flashing red led on the dash, they draw next to no current. DSE sell them.

Yeah I've just done this. Saving up for a car alarm so spent 6 bucks on a flashing LED and 6 bucks on a simple switch at Repco. I figure if there's 5 vehicles parked in a row and one of them has a red flashing light on the dashboard, a thief would skip it and focus on one of the other poor sods.
I'd love to catch someone in the act one day though!

here is a simple but efective anti theft trick for a safari ... on the fuel filtyer is a bleader tap undo it then se how far u can drive iut b4 it stops

about 100 meters

to get going again just bleed it up and close bleeding tap 2 reasons for it being good are:
1: they have to get under bonnet so if stalls they will be noticed by lots of people
2:if it does stop they more than likely wont b bothered to sort it so wont go far

my cruiser has 3 doors and 3 locks but only 1 works, good start a very visious doberman is the key just leave the muzzle off

also leave the truck in gear if the theif does not notice itl stall drawing attention also having acrumpled door that crunches on the front gaurd makes a good noise But above all the dog wins

Someone also suggested, quite a while back, to connect the horn to the ignition wire via a hidden switch.
As soon as someone tries to start it up, off goes the horn attracting all manner of attention.
You could even put a second horn or piezeo siren inside the cabin area too.

Piezo is mounted in the cabin roof, to the right, pointed at the drivers head.
A
LOUD one.
a
VERY loud one
DONT forget to have timer and disable switch though!!
a similar one outside, to attract public attention.
Insurance paid up.

Think something like this with my Truck Air horns activated via a relay would scare em off, not to mention, wake the neighbours

Timer operated, KP, MUST stop after twenty minutes and allowed to restart after ten.
TWO peiszos in cabin pointed at BOTH ears of miscreant , make the bastard DEAF!!!
If a petrol engine or even a diesel, devise an ignition system to spark through the seat to the steering wheel and or pedals , as an added inducement to leave your truck alone?

A Tesla coil comes to mind.

With the top spike to go up his arse at the same time as ignition strikes the arc!!

any ideas?

Jaycar or DSE for starters. They should have a simple timer kit set that will trigger when the ignition is hot. You should be able to preset the time to whatever you need.
I can have a look amongst my circuit diags for one if you like.
