I 've always thought about the milage and the time that way Mike, especially for planning a trip down the sth of central otago, so if you can keep a record of both that would be good. Maybe that could be an info page on the site somwhere, "Traveling times and milage by vehicle make".
And Tim, that's right, a couple of years ago we went that way, but veered off onto the serpentine instead of going the highway around the southern edge of the dunstan mountains to Alex. If anyone has cooling problems then they should declare themselves on the dansey pass, steep in places. I will probably not need to fill up until Alex, but you might want to top up in Timaru, then again in Alex.

Hi Matt,
there are beds inside if you want, no need to ring and book a site, I was chatting to the camp owner on the phone today and there is plenty of room for tents

Hey Matt, why don't you have your truck packed for a quick getaway on thursday arvo, you'd be there in 5-6 hrs. We'll have a can cold for ya  As for the sack, you are going to have to improvise. I had spotties and ropeholders in the way so took some cutting and sewing, the aim is to keep the particles suspended in the muddy water out of the radiator. Last time I went down whitcombe rd I was pulling the radiator out at back of mavora lakes to wash it.

Just a little usefull thing to carry in your recovery box. Its a BOTTLE BRUSH, handy for cleaning the radiator after the crap has dried , works a treat, specially on oldman peat bog holes.

So no-one going on the Friday or after work thursday night? I'll probably catch you all up at the Danseys pub anyway  (Thats one of my old locals... parents live in Naseby, very close by)

Not sure yet which way I'll go, but I know the Danseys can bite you in the ass when you least expect it so if alone, definitely thru Dunedin... or at the least through the pigroot (Turn inland at Palmerston onto {85} - faster really, cos there is not temptation to stop at the Danseys pub :P ).

I have no opinion on the one-group, two-group thing... I'll sit on the fence on that one... happy to go either way, BUT (and I suspect other 'significant others and children' will be the same) I know my wife hates one thing about 4WDing... standing around waiting for vehicle recoveries en-masse as truck after truck attempts the same hole... if there is a way to speed things up, and splitting the groups would be one way, then whe will vote in favour (or vote to go shopping in Alex for the day :P) We guys can stand about watching stuck trucks all day... and will deliberately take the hardest line to try and get stuck... women just don't seem to get that tho

11 or midnight? I'd allow 7-8 hours including stops... I have family on board... happy to make a convoy of it tho... We wouldn't be leaving until probably about 6:30-7pm by the time I get home and pack the truck up

You got that right Alistair. Looks like those mountains are getting a dusting of snow over the next couple of days, and if not, RAINat least.
I know my wife hates one thing about 4WDing... standing around waiting for vehicle recoveries en-masse as truck after truck attempts the same hole

Make sure you have a New Idea in the truck  nah seriously, if a hole looks too big for ya, then by all means go around. The only place I have ever gotten stuck on old man range is one mudhole going down whitcombe rd, seen Bill get stuck in just about all of them. Everyone should be pretty OK with all of them, as it will probably be the driesat I have seen it. We went down a few years ago when it was the wettest some locals had seen for a while, snow in the middle of summer, only Bill got stuck

We will be leaving Blenheim on Thursday after work, so might just stay the night in ChCh, and do an early start Friday to get down there.
Hope to be there by lunch time at the latest.

For those that are leaving @ 0800 on thursday, 0800 is the time I am driving off so get there before that. If you are arriving on friday the camp may look pretty empty but we should all be back by 5-6pm. Spoke with Alistair last night to finalise the tracks, boy are you guys in for a surprise  No only joking, some of it is country that neither Alistair or myself have been into 8) and by the way, at the moment there is rain down there but a high pressure is moving over from oz and will be in place by the weekend, so the mudholes shouldn't be too dry now.

Ok, looks like I just got the miracle I was hoping for and now have Thursday off work...

...however I have still got no tow hooks, let alone the winch, on the truck, and I need to pull the front springs and sort a sag problem on the drivers side.

So, if I'm not there by 8, and you haven't heard from me then I'll catch you up - might use that day to try and get some work finished on the truck before leaving...

Oh, Tim... just keep heading South, turn inland at Palmerston on SH85 and meet everyone at the Royal Hotel in Naseby (next pub after Danseys)...

There is actually a sign which says 'not suitable for caravans' at each end of the Danseys Rd.

I'm about to take a sledge hammer or petrol + lighter to my truck... Looks like the head gasket needs doing... so I'm thinking of taking the motor out and asking for a refund, then trying to find another one....

So I won't be joining you boys this weekend.. :(

All in all, I've had enough. as steve suggested I should just find a cliff and push it off....

Oh and all this on top of a serious lack of sleep in the last few weeks, is causing some customers & suppliers to get alot of expletives on the phone when they complain or cant do something....

but on the brightside, I don't have to work for two weeks... but I do have to find somewhere to live

Excellent, now if it anybody can fit it in, bring an arm full of wood for the camp "tv" (fire). Have been looking at the weather and although the weekend will be fine, thursday and friday could be cold. Sun will be shining during the day though.
Got a set of BFG 33's fitted today 8) , awesome another inch off the ground, first set of BFG's so it will be interesting to see how they compare to the pirelli's I have been running over the last two years.
Steve forget the winch, just work on what is important and you can have an extra days 4wheeling.
pity you have to pull out Bill, any chance you and family could pop down for BBQ on sat night?Al

Its a replacement engine. The guy who installed the motor, didn't notice the smell of evaporated water (having had a head go, I know what they smell like and what the exhaust looks like) Basically after 5 months of messing about the motor still doesn't work right.... before christmas it wasn't the head it was the injectors, now after fixing that theres a problem with the head. Considering it wasn't using water before christmas, I think with all the fiddling thats been done the most like problem is the head gasket's stuffed...
