Air only heats up when it is under a( great lot) of compression, In your case I dout you would get any advantage from running it throw the air con element. Just fit an oiler on the inlet side and a oil-trap on the out-let side, Why try and reinvent the wheel.

i have just set this up in my truck. intake plumbed to engine air intake, output has water trap and quick release socket. i will be setting this up with a tank when i get one, one problem i have with current setup is if you have compressor running with the tyre tool not releasing air the pressure will build up and break something hopefully just pop a hose not break the compressor.

you could still plumb a pressure relief valve into the system, even without a tank. You know that the bit that goes "pop" when the pressure in your system gets to high will be the most expensive part to replace!!

how about an adjustable pressure switch. $55 + GST and freight.
1-10 bar and any voltage up to 42 volt.
very simple 2 wire inline type.

adjustable pressure relief valves $70 +... 1-10 bar..

auto draining oil mist seperator. $150 +..

any fittings or filters, regulator etc.. just PM me..

The pressure switch is easily the simplist one ive ever used.. and water proof!!

if you want a tank. go to repco or similar and buy the 5 galloin powerbuilt one. it has standard tyre valve inlet. pressure gauge and tyre valve outlet.. or change the fittings..
Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..

If you want all the bits (well almost)do what I did and head off to Super Cheap, Repco or wahtever, and buy a 240 volt compressor for $90 - $150.
It has everything you need (almost). Just rip off the electric motor and compressor unit and ditch them. You will have a tank, pressure switch (with cut out) Gauge, pressure relief valve etc. :D

At some stage down the line I may want to use my air-con compressor as an air compressor, so I'll leave it where it is but I just wondered if you guys could give me a little advice.

you see I want to fit dual batteries to my 84 surf (2nd battery is just sitting in the shed :( ) and there is an air-con line in the way, in my repair manual it basically says that I am a spastic and if I attempt to open up anything to do with my air-con I can expect to freeze my eyelids to my eyeballs.

So is this a fair warning or can the average joe pull the hoses, radiator and pretty much everything else air-con related apart from the compressor out of his truck and not sorely regret it?

Also if I can do the tearout should I cap the compressor hoses? and if so how? mmmm insulation tape.

The guy I bought the truck off said the air-con did'nt work and that it needed re-gassing. Any advice would be great :D

sounds about the same condition as mine used to be..... empty.
id gamble that youd undo the hoses and no eyeball freeze up

On the condensor (i think this is what it is) there is a sight glass type thing abit smaller than one of those old 5c pieces  I'm pretty sure it is green if there is gas but clear/black? if there isn't. Like Roc said do it outside, as you undo the fittings you'll hear the hiss as any gas escapes, and you can regulate how fast it comes out by how much you undo the fitting. Best not to just cut through hoses.

on the aircon pipes there will also be little valves like that on your tyres. just press them down and see if theres any pressure, much easy than undoing pipes. if your worried about the gas most air con places will bleed the system for you.

Yes but it is horrible gas and you don't want to be standing anywhere near it when it is disapating (it stinks). I loosened a join and walked away from it & had smoko, or do it overnight or something. Stay away from the gas.

Mullet, don't go telling the public that you are going to let refridgerant escape into the atmosphere or you will be in more trouble than me for washing my vehicle in the river  . Seriously, your 84 surf will have R12 refridgerant in it and get caught releasing it and you will get slapped in the pocket with a very heavy fine. The responsible way  is to go to your local A/C man and he will pull the gas out and cap your fittings. R12 is very damageing to the ozone layer .
This is my penance for washing mud into our water ways (I feel much better now)

Thanks for all the advice guys, I had no idea the gas was bad for the ozone, I'll get in touch with an air-con outfit soon. I can't believe anyone gave smokey S%#T over washing the mud off his truck in the river, if you had'nt all noticed New Zealand pours millions of litres of raw sewage into our rivers every year, you wana bitch about mud and CR@P in our rivers? blame the next flood or maybe fontera.

Ok, maybe your right, fonterra is only doing what the government is letting them do, so maybe the blame lays with them.

Anyone thinking about having a political arguement, don't bother, I won't. My point is that poor Smokey is the last person that should be in everyones crosshairs.

Hay Mullet , thanks for jumping to my defence but no one has had a go at me. I was having a crack at myself after my washing photo was in the 9/9th trip photos , and thought seeing as ecan turned up at the start of the trip as if they knew it was on they may also see this photo.Actually I tend to think they where in the area because of the vehicle ban for whitebaiting access and saw our group and decided to check us out .
