What upgrades do I need???
Re: What upgrades do I need???
Guys it's a TJ, those bolts are not metric! He needs Grade 5 or Grade 8 hex bolts. These hooks should be on the front end of the frame rails but you have said it can only be confirmed once someone looks at it in person. Bumper is mounted to the frame with two bolts on top and one on the bottom on each side.

Ok, so I am going up to woodhill to cruise around with Jay next weekend, he should be able to have a look over it and make sure it's ok? (If I ask him really nicely of course
)

They will be 1/2"-13 UNC. Get Grade 8 high tensile bolts. Torque to 75-80 ft-lbs. Length for the bolt should be 2" to 2 1/2".
Any good engineering supplier should have them. This will help you identify grading on hex bolts

Start getting used to inches rather than mm. It's a Jeep.

cap head bolts = HT normally grade 12.9...
changing out grade 12.9 cap heads to grade 8 bolts was sugested to me by a scruitineer once and i told him to get fcuked cos he was an idiot.
if they are steel cap heads (probably grade 12.9)and bolted propperly to a good bit of chassis then they are fine.
unless they are S/S cap heads in which case change them

If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!
Re: What upgrades do I need???
x2
Cap heads normally 12.9. Check what is stamped on them, there is all sorts of rubbish around.

Re: What upgrades do I need???
Look for the marking or grade numbering on the rim of the head or on the outside wall of the cap head. If it's 12.9 then it's fine.

My logic for safety is if I can't positively identify a bolt's rating, I would replace it with something of known strength.

Do you think Jeep club will accept me as a member?
I've never been approached so nicely to join yet.

Re: What upgrades do I need???
Hey guys, so, I had a mechanic friend look over my Jeep for me and the front bolts are rated to 12.9. I've moved my trailer plug into the boot where it can stay for the immediate future. I've also got myself a recovery hitch to go in where my tow ball goes. Looks like I'm as ready as I can be to go get muddy today, so excited!!! (hence posting this at 4 am...)
Next job, find some rims and save for some mud grip tyres

That's great. Previous owner was clued up on things. That's a good sign for general maintenance too.
We expect some good wheeling photos. It is addictive from here on.
