It was excellent to see it out in the mud finally. Dont think anything stopped it during the day (unlike a few of the Rangies that were in our group (sidegears in one and an axle in another  )
Seem to be the day for driving on 2 wheels huh Chris

Dragging up an old thread i know. :)

ROTAZUK

Are you still running the CA18 :?: How has it held up to off roading :?: You mentioned in the thread you felt the coils might be and issue, were/are they :?:

sorry for all the Q's I have a CA18 and auto out of a silvia sitting on the floor looking for a new home in my Zuk.

Its currently getting lux 4.88s on coils with strech wheel base. Was thinking CA18, auto and either zuk trans or perhaps divorcing the lux trans i have. I know the transfer will need to go backwards. Rear axle has gone back about 200mm so should have room. Radiator is going in the back.

any thoughts/hits on the CA18 would be appreciated.

cheers Meatc

The CA18 is still in it , but I can't say its running . Its had a hard life the poor old thing . Several months after it was running I rolled it of a bank , so it looks a little different now .

In the 18 months it was running ( and when it was running it was great ) I did about 3 coil packs . So they have not been good as expected . If you were to install one look at taking the factory packs off and wiring up normal coils to each plug .

Last Novemebr it started to run badly at idle , once above 2g it was fine . A little hard to drive that way thou . In Jan this year it spat another coil pack and onto of the idle I had not solved I cut the factory loom in half in a fit of rage . Felt much better after that :D

After spending lots of time trouble shooting the idle problem , computer air flow meters etc etc etc ( on the bright side have lots of spares ) I wired up a aftermarket computer and had same problem , high idle
In this process I had compression tested it several times ( it spent a lot of time on the rev limiter :) ) I had low compression on no 3 maybe twice , leak down showed nother etc . Figured I may have a bent valve .
Anyway long storey short I ended up replacing the whole intake off another engine and found some foam stuck in no 3 secondard intake port  . No idea what its from but it was fuel soaked so been there a while and rather hard , not intake foam .

So all set to run again but the fuel injector relay is short open so it sits in the shed awaiting a new one . Thats been its storey for the last 6 months , yes I am lazy but been doing work around the house . Hope to get it running in the next month or so .

The engine loves to rev , always a good thing for a zuk engine and I never wanted more power even thou I have a turbo to go onto it . Its a fair bit heavier than a zuk engine but I do have it bolted to a terano gearbox and tcase . It would be right on the limit for the zuk t/case but being auto may handle it ok .

Most of my greif was fitting the gearbox in so divorced case should be a lot easier . I would be hard pushed not to put a 1600 suzuki into it , but if you have a ca18 and can do the work its a great engine when all the coils work .

Cheers Chris

Post to answer your questions with out all the dribble .
Yes the coils were a bit of a problem , but carry a spare and you will be sweet . They are cheep now , only about $20 and I have about 7 good ones :) . best option swap then out for nornal coils .

Apart from my idle problem it has been sweet , revs well . Zuk t/case would be marginal , I have been told they will take 150hp but doubt this , being an auto will help thou . The engine just fits in the engine bay with a radiator in the front but there is only 2 cm clearance on the firewall , without a radiator you can move it forward to help tunnel clearance also . I had to do a major cut to get the terano gearbox in there .

My tcase rear output is in the same place as the zuk tcase output so I was lucky , with a divorced case it will move back I expect . The silvia manual gearbox was going to move the tcase back 30 cm , could not do that as I only moved the rear wheels back about 100mm .

Have all the wiring diagrams here and the silvia workshop manual on cd if you want it . Have spare computers and a turbo computer and injectors etc

Ask and questions and keep me posted on how it goes .

Would I do it again . No . not with a terano gearbox due to all the work making a lh front output diff . but if you have it and need an engine I think its a good choice , something different to the usual 4age etc .

Cheers

Thanks for the reply.

I thnk the trans case will have to go back about 150mm bit thats sweet cause axle has gone back 200ish.

The terrano box got me thinking though. Just scored a terrano (stolen/recovered) for super cheap. It has an auto in it. But I think divorcing the hilux trans of finding an old MQ patrol divorced trans might be easier than cutting up the front axle. But being the lazy arse i am i'll prob use the zuk one till it explodes :? . I'll prob put a ring around it to stop it spliting open.

Interesting about the coil packs breaking down. Will carry spares or swap them out.

Did you stick with the control arm bushes for engine mounts?

The foam in the intake track sounds like sabbotage to me  just completely bizzare. I know about other things getting in the way of 4x4ing mines been in bits for over 7 months and slowing down.

Thanks again I'm sure ill have more questions as I go.

Hi
Yeh stayed with the control arm bushes as engine mounts , ironically for the possibility of it rolling over . Never thought I would do it thou , 3 or 4 times down the hill and the engine never moved .

Cheers
