Missed the disscussion in January. Just to report the current situation of my machine for anyone still need help.
So far has done 40000ks, no problem found, done boost gauge, catch can, runs specified engine oil, blocked EGR, made a manual boost control gauge in parallal with the current system to restrict the maximum boost at 12psi. Planned to do EGT Gauge when I have money.
www.patrol4x4.com do have a great reference file for anyone who need help on these motor, all my mods are according to this file.
I beleive this is just as similar situation as Mazda-RX7, stronge motor but fragile. Needs a bit more care.

Why are you restricting boost?
If you drop the boost below the level the engine requires, your egts climb and your engine cooks.

they often do it it to stop the turbo from over boosting and destroying itself.
i think 12psi is a bit low, 15psi would be more like it.
a lot of it is to simply take the control of the turbo away from the ECU. they have a few weird problems like intermittent dropping boost (down to 4 psi) while at cruise. ECU shoves more fuel in so there is no change in power but EGT's go through the roof.

That sort of thing is usually done to burn clean particulate filters and the like. But these engines don't have them do they?

no DPF's on the non-common rail ones. thought it might be for heating the cat but it doesn't happen on all vehicles, just some seam to do it for some unknown reason.

Well, if you let the author know, they might be able to help. This motor is far more popular in Australia than NZ.

My one is a little funny case because even I don't restrict the boost to 12Psi, it goes up to 12psi anyway after reaching 2000rpm. It spiked to 18-20Psi before 2000rpm, so I just to restrict it at 12 to completely eliminate the spike.
Does any body know how to check the intake air leaking? and where I can have them done cheaply in Auckland? Because I doubt that is the reason.

Are you running an EGT gauge to check if you're providing it with enough boost?
I'd expect an engine like that to need at least 15psi, so 18-20 peak would be about right.

no, but some one with a 3ltr patrol ran a test and found it gains no power improvement after 16psi.
These motors have more power because of hi presure direct fuel injection creates fine mist to burn. Not with a higher boost, and boost increase can not increase the power.
I will set up the EGT soon, need some time and tools.
By the way, someone is selling a same vechile at cheap price on trademe, just if any one interested. With the help of the infomation we can get, it should be quite confident to own one of these great vehicles.

Higher boost is not about increasing the power (forget petrol engine thinking), it's about keeping the EGT temps down so your pistons and turbo don't melt.
Dangerously high EGT's develop excellent power, but engine life suffers.
The "high pressure fuel injection" is about emission control (smoke etc), it does not reduce the engines need for air.

if its spiking even with a controller then its likly there is a problem with the actual turbo. there have been problems with the vanes plate rusting which makes it slow to respond and worse case can seize in one location.
usually if there is a leak and your not running catch can you will get oil coming out of any leak. the factory intercooler is known to crack. a few places have a tougher version that will fit straight in, havn't heard of any in NZ tho.
an EGT guage is highly recommended. things can really go bad when the MAF plays up.
