Outdoor Recreation NZ survey

Thanks team, an excellent show of support. Before any money is requested we will need to get ORNZ systems kick started again. The survey results are encouraging and certainly show that quite a few people think that recreation in the outdoors needs pushing politically.

The problem with an off-road party is that they'll very probably never be elected, and even less likely to be in a position of leverage. So you can't rely on that as the sole strategy - you need to lobby both big parties as well (note I say 'as well' and not 'instead' 
)...
We probably also need to also find other groups who have the same access problems (eg tourist operators, greenies, bikers, etc) and work together.

ORNZ is not an off road party in any sense, but the 4x4 community is one that reflects many outdoor recreations. If we had an email list to every outdoor group then we'd certainly tap into them too and will be looking at ways to reach other groups.
There have been several examples of the subtle influence on government policy of ORNZ and these include last years Mountains to the Sea conference in Wellington and the recently announced panel to look at the issues of game animals. DOC themselves now have recreation as the leading image on their website...even if it's only lip service!

Hmmm, you might want to tell the designers of the survey that - all those "I'd be willing to stand for parliament", etc, questions suggests suggest otherwise...
BTW I'm not diss-ing a party type solution either, I'm just saying don't rely on it as a single strategy.
And indeed as it sounds like much effective lobbying of the existing powers-that-be already occurs....

An update on ORNZ, as there was good interest from this forum.
Through a lack of time and drive on the part of those of us still pedalling ORNZ, the Party has not achieved enough members this year to maintain its listing with the Electoral Commission.
We have advised the Commission of that.
Outdoor Recreation NZ will still exist as an organisation but not as an political party... although if there were enough politically minded people to help drive it, there is no reason that it could not register again.
Thank you to all who had contributed and if you still wish to be a member of ORNZ then you are still welcome to join.
