Power comparisons from 2000 in the Upper Grey

Andi Delis range rover V8
Nigel Harris Hilux V8
Me 2.8 hilux with broken CV and 3 wheel Drive and super swampers
Bones= Mighty 110 with 6 litre V8 and 35s which were big tyres in 2000

I cant remember what the others had . I had 32x10.5 simex ETs. I think Tim had 35 creepy crawlers, Tim will probably post and let you know. Nigel had 33 BFGs I think and Greg had 33 radials of some kind

Richard i love watching your vids, you make each track soooooooo easy (good on you for been a great driver, oneday i hope to be on a trip with you so i too can make it look easy.)

tim drove that hole soo well i think he won the easyie lookin ride, if you were on 32" then you did well there too.

iv been through there in my pajero on 33 and i just made it.

Yeah but how many of those rigs are alive today BP?
Strange Rover is long dead and gone, And correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that Lux that nigel parked on it's lid down a bank.

DJ's 110, Don't know what happened to that beast when he sold it. Does anyone else? I remember when Bones put those Kumhos on, he was the "man" on 35's :D .

Your lux that has been beaten to hell and back is still there though. I like that :mrgreen:

I was just pleased I got all my limbs and head out of the way, does show that it can be a dangerous sport at times, a bad injury in a remote location without cellph reception can be fatal, unfortunately as we all know this does happen.
I was lucky, and I have a flash white truck now......want to buy it???

Yes I did need a change of pants, we then winched it back ot to it's wheels, did some reshaping with a sledgehammer and hi lift jack, then drove on, and home :mrgreen:

Good pic, You were very lucky not to have been knocked out, the way that boulder crushed the roof in. Looks like Riks truck behind.
I can see the same thing happening on the entry into Bulletproof Chasm. I have already seen the rear wheels on 3 trucks leaving the ground and going sideways.

On this thread I have stated Why I dont like petrols for the real world. Yesterday I received Rudes video of Als birthday trip through the Grey River.
You will notice the Grey didn't have too much water . Riks petrol still died.
Al backed in to tow, He stalled and then Jase had to go in twice to tow too dead trucks from the river and this little exercise took quite a bit of time to the point night was coming on.

This is what the Grey could have been like and they would have been in deep trouble because you can not afford to sit there that long.

I appreciate what you say Richard and listen to your advice, please keep it coming. My Cruiser has the 3F Petrol Motor, that's what It came with and it has been ultra reliable in the 10 plus years I have owned It. It has only let me down in water once and that was a training day on the Waipara River for ORE that I was running, (very :oops: ing ). This was caused by a quick distributor change the day before and i didn't have time to finish my water proofing :evil: .
The Red Cruiser crossing the Grey in the previous vid, is the water proof version. To water proof I have fitted HT leads and Caps from a Jet Ski, the Dist; body was drilled and tapped with a brass fitting that I run 6mm nylon tube through the fire wall into the dash area ( for clean dry air ), the top of the Dis; cap has been drilled and I arildite 6mm nylon tube in the cap and run this to a fitting on the inlet side of the air cleaner housing, this creates a through flow ventilation system.The cap is then sealed onto the body using loktite (spelling) 515 sealant, this remains flexy and can be removed. The distributor is then put to a vacuum or pressure test to check for leaks, I use the tubing that is fitted to apply vacuum or pressure to check this. I only have the HT electrics sealed on the 3F and It will run totally submerged. The main thing I have to be aware of with water is the Clutch , It's hard to stop the water entering there.

Im not trying to pick on any one here, Before the trip I warned any one with a petrol the need for 100% water proofing and when I received Rudes Video yesterday I thought here we go again. Things can turn to custard very quick and not only is the one stuck in danger but ones having to do the rescue as well .I have seen it so many times before as you must have seen as well. The Canterbury Rivers are worse again and the need of speed to recover a truck before it rolls can't be over emphasied .

You have done a good job of waterproofing your truck, and I'm glad you spelt it out because others can learn from your experience.

Many don't realize the power of water so I put the other video on to show how quick it happens. A couple of xmas's ago the Grey River washed Andi Delis about 50 metres down river and it was only lucky he didn't roll .

I had a good three inches of water in the truck that night. I even plugged the bilge pump in just in case it started getting any higher :lol:

Rokhound made the comment you need to grow with your truck and learn from experience. How true, When I first fitted lockers nothing was going to stop me. How wrong , Trying to out class DJ in the mighty 110 on the Staircase track.

Yep would have to agree with the point being made Richard, lockers can get you into more shit then they can get you out of :!: I found on the Ikamatua trip that once I stopped using the rear locker so much, things became a little easier.

Gotta love replacing cv's on a river eh?
We had one trip with 4 trucks and broke 3 cv's in 1 hrs driving. One rig broke 2, and it is the dirtiest, shityists job at the best of times, but when the rocks you are balanced on are 1/2 the size of the truck with water flowing underneath you..............

One thing many disagree with me on is using Lockers in a rocky river. Others say to use them all the time.

I dont use lockers at all in a Rocky River for 2 reasons.

1 If you get stuck with lockers you can be in deep trouble , because you are really stuck. If you get stuck without them you can still usually drive out by turning them on.

2 A couple of times I have blown a CV is in rocky rivers with big boulders. I have just been idling along around 800rpm and because there is no slip on the wheels the CVs round up and broke.

I havn't broken a CV since putting in the cruiser diff about 5 years ago. Screwed off two axles though'

What about the long cross shaft in the ARB lockers ? I have broken 2 of these. Do others have problems when they put the Longs in ?

And lockers do help and having a long wheelbase here really helps because you can lock all 4 wheels and still steer something that is hard for a short to do.

More important than the hilux is my wife Janet.
Over the years she has gone on nearly every trip. Might have missed 4 or 5.
Spent a number of years as secretary of the Nelson Club. Put many hours into setting out and deciding on questions for the coast to coast.
Always there with the Video to capture all our stuff ups etc. That why I have heaps of DVDs.

A month ago on Als birthday trip she was as crook as a dog with the flu but still went to record the trip.

A clip from Feb 1998 on a trip down the Upper Grey for her 45th birthday . Camping at Station Creek
Janet actually drove the Upper Grey . A grade 4-5 trip with a broken CV in 3 wheel drive.
