I've caught a ride in tradie's vans (2wd) going up steep gravel driveways...they wheel spin and can't get up the drive. I got him to pull the handbrake on a few clicks and try again....the van drove straight up!!

this is funny as fcuk. Everyones veiw is correct . All of the above stuff works just at different levels.

Way i see it offroad performance levels seem to go like this
Open frnt,open rear
Open frnt ,lsd rear
open front,locked rear
locked frnt locked rear.

Have seen a few with lsd in front but made most of them a bit of a hand full esp when on sidling or trying to turn.

End of the day lsd gota be better than nothing!!??. For those of us on little budgets bunging a couple of shims in is still cheapa than any sorta diff lock :wink:

Exactly! How hard is it to get shims to make the lock up better? for terrano diff?

Has anyone atually fitted a Lokka type difflock to the rear of their D21?
Are they even available? I've seen them advertised for the front.

Perhaps I'll look for an LSD for the rear, then a Lokka for the front when $ allow.

Sibainmud has a locker in the rear of his terrano.

i was always been told you could not buy a auto lokka for the rear nissan safari??
just for the front is this correct??
i have been been running twin lsd's in my saf for 5yrs now but want to lock the rear and i really want arb but got to wait maybe 6mths

Yeah man, front only unfortunately. The front auto locker is the same part number as the rear locker for the D21 Terrano/Navara.

I had the factory LSD in the rear and the Auto locker in the front. Worked ok, but we all know what a locked front is like on sidelings and greesy hill climbs were there's no ruts.

If your looking for an auto locker www.4WDbits.co.nz are always good to deal with.

I see they list one for the Y60 patrol front diff, so it should go into your D21 rear diff. That was the case with the Lockright. These are pretty much the same thing, but made by some one in OZ.

If you have a rear LSD, you need to find a diff head that has an open /non LSD carrier before you can fit the locker.

Do some searches on the net, especially Oz forums like www.outerlimits4x4.com its interesting that they don't have a listing for the D21 any more, could be something in that??

JUst incase you don't find any info, this is what I can remember ofthe story:

The Lockrights are made by an American company called Richmond Gears. As a result, they made lockrights to fit the majority of 4x4's on the road in the USA.

The D21 Terrano was one of those vehicles, badged as a Pathfinder over there.

The states never got the Y60 Patrol or Safari. Strange eh??

So Richmond Gears made a Lockright that fitted the rear of the Pathfinder, as the rears is the correct place for a diff lock if you are only going to fit one :wink: :wink: :wink: :wink:

So the Oz boy's, while searching around for auto lockers to fit their Y60 Patrols discovered that the front diff carrier in the Patrol was the same as the rear diff carrier in the American D21 Pathfinders.
The now had a auto locker that fitted the Patrols.

So what you see there on the above link as listed for the front diff of the Patrol, was not its intended use. It was originally designed for the rear of a D21 Pathfinder.

Somewhere in the mix over the years this info has got buried and obviously they don't bother to list the locker as fitting the D21 Terrano rear.

Do some research yourself though :wink: :wink: :wink: :wink: :wink:

Just skimmed thru the last page, the d21 (h233b i think) rear diff is different to the front patrol diff.
The patrol centre has only 2 spider/side gears. The lock-rite for the d21 is designed to be used with the open 4 spider centre not the patrol 2 spider centre.
So my thinking would be that a patrol front lokka or lock-rite could only be used in the rear of a d21 if you were to fit the 2 spider centre from a patrol front diff.
This is what I found when I bought a d21 lock-rite for my patrol front diff :wink:

Thats what I did get... Only the centre will fit, the crown wheel an pinnion is useless :roll: you put the centre into the patrol housing with the patrol crownwheel an pinnion. Thats what I did only I used the LSD centre an sold my lock-rite

should do. Rear terrano LSD goes into the front of some safaris, not sure what models.

I can get a Lock-right for my rear diff from the USA, but it's for the 2-piece diff. How do I tell if my diff is 2 or 4 piece (I'm assuming that means 2/4 spider gears) without taking it out.

H233b diff locks 31 spline.
After several months of researching various diff locks for my D21 Pathfinder here is what I have found. Besides air lockers.

Power Trax make a locker for the 2 and 4 spider gear diffs (2 or 4 pinion)
Model 3210 for the 2 pinion
Model 3220 for the 4 pinion
These only replace the center part, eg the spider gears, so is not suitable for an LSD diff.
Cost around $350 + $60 shipping to Aust

Eaton, make a Detroit locker part #187SL-167A
Supposedly stronger, this replaces the whole center, ie you replace the whole center assy, and bolt your ring gear to it. Suitable to replacing the gust of an LSD diff, and 2 or 4 spider gear diff.
Cost around $620 + $188 shipping to Aust.

All these stay locked, but one side unlocks for cornering, when torque is removed. But, if when cornering, you put your foot down, they will lock, and push you straight ahead. I’ve also read they can make some noise as they unlock and lock.
H233b diffs are in the front of some patrols, if they be 2 or 4 spider gear I’m not sure. This maybe why some retailers only stock a locker for the font of a Patrol even though its an H233b diff there
I intend get the Detroit in the new year.

I was lucky enough to go to the USA and bought a detriot diff lock for the rear, H233b. AUD620 and no transport costs. Will advise once it's in.
