Help needed, Steering shaft question

Post by lneil »

Does anyone know a standard steering intermediate shaft that is slightly longer than the 3Dr 1600 shaft, to allow for a three inch body-lift?

I need a one-piece splined shaft that's about 15mm longer than the standard one. It's got to be legit' for certification.

What has everyone else used with a 3 inch lift?

when i did my 3 inch lift the shaft was long enough, de-ranged makes small spacers for the uj on the shaft (where the rubbers are) that are good for cert.
Its better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

Do you have power steering ?
The manual steering shaft is longer then the powersteering shaft , not sure by how much thou . Would be close I expect .

If you don't have powersteering just put it in :)

Thanks Weemsy.

I called Reece the other night and he's sent me some pics of your grubby mitt with the spacer set-up. I'm going to run it past the certifier. Thanks for treading the path first for me!

Thanks Chris,

I'll make enquiries as to the exact shaft lengths then. I've got power steering so the manual shaft may be a possibility too.

I found what I think is a manual steering shaft . uj center to uj center it is 400mm give or take 1 or 2 mm . The manual steering box i have on the shelf does not have the end on it to check thats what it is but its in the pile of vit bits so it should be .

Whats the length of a p/s shaft ?

Thanks Chris. I went out and measured the standard power-steer shaft and its 365mm, so I need one right in the middle of the two factory options. Of course!!

Oh well, as long as the certifier approves, Reece's spacers sound like the best bet.

The Jimny one APPEARS to be 395mm U/J centre to centre.
And since Vitara & Jimny power steering boxes are often used in SJ conversions I ass-u-me they are the same size splines.

Dumb question #153; Could you use a Jimny one and take up 15mm on the slip end?
If not, can you slide the column through the dash about 10mm?

Alternatively, how long is a SJ/Sami or even Coily shaft, about 380mm?
