1kzte lacking in power help!!

Post by jA- »

Hey guys a mate of mine just got a 93 surf and its gutless as...like slower than the 2.4 i'd say

its only running 31" tyres so shoudn't be that...

seems to be getting enough diesel as it does have a slight stream of black but there is also some blue in there :(

its boosting 12-13psi other than that there is no odd noises or anything else...

do these have a boost cut or anything like that??

also the check engine lights hasn't come on or anything...so they store codes etc or not?

any ideas/things to check would be great

cheers

Any one of these things could cause your problems.

Start with fuel.
Check screen in tank.
Change fuel filter in engine bay.
Check screen on fuel/injector pump.
Check fuel lines arent leaking (could suck in air)
May want to blow out fuel lines....

Check all intake pipes are tight and not leaking.
Check/change air filter.

Check glow plugs are working.

Still a slug, check / clean injectors.

After this it could be...
Choked intake system with EGR gunk.
Cracked head.
Worn rings.
Worn valves.
Combo of all above.

Otherwise take it into a diesel specialist....

Hope this helps

Note Boost is about right.... There is an overboost cut off at about 15psi.

They do store codes, the engine check light will stay on when engine is running indicating it has a fault.

Do a search of the forum , you will find a link to an online manual for the 1KZTE engine which has troubleshooting info in it and how to access the codes.

Maybe air filter is blocked ?
The blue smoke suggests your burning oil & black is unburnt diesel.
Take it to a diesel specialist cause it it shits itself is massive dollars.
Mine is costing about $2500 to rebuild after running a bearing & also the head.

Spun a big end....so had to totally strip it to see what was wrong & also clean out all the bits of metal in the motor.
When apart noticed a tiny crack in head.
So doing basically everything .....will be almost a brand new motor.

All new bearings , head , water pump , timing belt , tensior , adjuster , over haul oil pump, thermostat . Also fitting a EGT when it arrives from USA...cheaper than buying in NZ.Also disconnecting EGR.
Most likely other stuff too as while ive goit in bits be silly not to do it lol...its only money

Yeh good idea, havent heard of a Surf yet that hasnt had its head replaced at some stage.Thats why i said cracked head! :D
Glad toyota decided to drop the price of new heads though! they did it just after old man replaced his in his hiace  they reckon fitting a bigger exhaust 2.5"-3" helps prevent it too.
