righto, thought it may be a good idea to have a thread dedicated to 80 series and any FAQs that owners may have about them.

Starting with me.............

Noticed a whine coming from under bonnet that increases and decreases with throttle
Popped the bonnet and had a look thinking it was power steering pump, but it seemed to be internal then had a closer look and realised there was no visual power steering pump, so that must be internal and gear driven.

So because I'm no mechanic, how is it lubed is there any way the lubing may have a blockage or something are they easy to change if its poked anyone had to do this and if so, what was the cost of the pump *skid cringes*

Not sure about inteligence but

Could be any number of bearings not just power steer. Alternator, water pump or any of the idlers including cam belt idlers (if it has cam belt)

My race truck had a good whine to it that was cam belt idler. Has a new one post vegas which is the bearings in the replacement alt.

The power steer pump died on my 80 a few years back, was doing 100 on the m/way towing the boat and with no warning at all, No whining just stopped. I had the pump reco'd but cant remember the cost, not too bad to change its just a gear drive plus some fluid.

I have just managed to strip the spline on the inner front axle so any knowledge on that would be appreciated!

How bad is it running the p/s pump dry? I ran it dry for ages (stupid boy) but now that I've fixed the leaky hose the pump doesn't sound any different? I figured if it was fucked it would let me know...

If I'm correct, the power steering pump is run off the gears that run the injector pump and on the back of the p/s pump is the vacuum pump? This is for 1HDT

Skid diddly widdly boy! Any luck with said pump?

Just managed to get mine pulled apart-ish (inside for a toilet break) vacuum pump is on the front (fan side), PS is on the backside

If the pump fails then driving without 35s is not a problem, just have to go FAST.

Or if your guns are big enough you can go a bit slower.

Now that I've got it semi apart on an engine stand I know getting the pump out later on when it's in the truck is not a major - put it in gear and the crank will stop spinning etc.... Just need a smaller beer gut to lean over the engine bay!

JUST NEED A ####### GEAR PULLER damnit.

At 36kgs it's hard to believe I've had the thing singing at 4000rpm

Right,

I think I have finally got to the bottom of a brake issue I have been having with the 80. After I have been around a corner, I found the brake pedal had heaps of play on the 1st pump, second pump it was sweet. On the straight, sweet. Checked the bearings and they fine. Swapped master cylinder and still same problem Upon inspection of the calipers and comparing them with Jungle's, we have found that both calipers are missing the piece of steel that holds the pads against the disk. I think its also called an anti-chatter device (bit of thin spring steel).

By any chance does someone have a couple? Please, it sucks driving in straight lines only!
