locking up in reverse

Post by minefield »

I have a 1997 pajero turbo and I am finding that the gearbox appears to lock up if I am in 4wd and reversing for to a long distance, I have been told this is normal for the Pajero???

yea thats not normal. We can back up for as long as we want in ours with no problems.

Also is it auto or manual and what about the hubs? are they locking up?

They don't have hubs so it can't be them.

Define locking up.

When I bought the Pajero the gearbox was just done and yes it dose have Auto hubs I had them put on , The garage that fitted the Auto hubs said when I told him about it locking up in reverse he was the one that said that it is known for the early model Pajero's to lock up also he said some Subaru's do the same.

I have just rang one of the dealers here in Christchurch and they are saying it's not normal and saying it may be the front auto hubs not set up right, It's raining right now when it stops I am going to unscrew the ends of the auto hubs and take the cog out and see what happens.

It pisses me off as I am a ex Nissan man and I bought the Pajero cheap to run and go almost anywhere

I will post if there any difference.

NJV6,

you can laugh all you like but since I put the auto hubs on I am using 30% less fuel., it may take a while to sort out the problem but with the fuel prices I don't mind. 8)

I made a mistake with the year it's a 1987 2.5 turbo not 1997

Have been flat out at work, and it's raining today [Sunday] so I have not touched the truck as yet, and yes the truck stopped dead, it first happened when I was going hunting, Missed a turn off and started to back back the truck came to a sudden stop as though I had put the brakes on, I was on my way up to lake Sumner so i was in H-4WD slowing down to go over a washout I went down to 2 gear and it locked up even the gear stick went all funny, I had to wiggle the gear stick around just to get gears, This happened twice while driving ie; changing down to a lower gear.

Now it seems a little better as I have been off road on hunting trips and no problems, "BUT", I am careful if I have to reverse, In saying that When I started this post it happened when backing out of my driveway, This is when I asked my mechanic and he told me it's a known problem
