Leaking fuel pump in Hilux surf

Post by wagonsnz »

Hi all, I have a 93 surf SSR-X, and have noticed recently I have a diesel leak coming from the fuel pump. Apparently this is a common problem, due to low-sulphur fuel or just seals wearing out, or both.
On start up it runs very rough and there is a constant drip coming from underneath, which stops once the engine has warmed up. I have read that you can change the two seals under the top plate of the pump without removing it from the car, but if it is one of the other seals, it is then a major job involving removing a lot of stuff to get it out completely for a refurb.
On closer inspection, mine seems to be leaking from the bottom side near to the block somewhere but very hard to get a decent look without pulling stuff off, which I am hesitant to do until I hopefully get a bit more info about this from the knowledgable folks on here.
I am happy to do jobs like this myself, and have done before, BUT if it involves taking a crapload of parts out then I am a bit more hesitant, especially involving timing etc. If this is actually a common problem, it would be interesting to know if anyone has had it, and/or any info/ideas on what to do? If I got someone to do it for me, any hints on who to go to? And is it going to cost a small fortune...? I am in Christchurch.

Apologies if this is covered on here somewhere already, I had a search and couldn't find anything.

Thanks in advance
