Selling: Prado front axle with 5-link setup for a surf

Post by SamLogan »

Hey guys,

As stated above i am looking at selling my solid front axle out of my surf in the new year. I have blown another rear diff today which is my 4th this year. I think the combination of a heavy right foot, power and big tyres is killing them. I have a set of patrol axles that i am going to be putting under it. So if you are looking for a prado axle with a 4.3 diff that is setup for a 5-link with strengthening and all on it let me know. It is also currently setup for coilovers. It also has the wide hub swap done on it. Will be available when Tom has time to put it in.

Cheers
Sam

Geez Sam, what are you doing to them?
I run 40's with the fee8 and haven't buggered a rear diff yet. (even on the old truck)
Are you doing heaps of burnouts or some shit?
A std front end I can see you destroying quite easily, but when you fill your axles with chromolly bits the tensile strength is 50% greater again than a std Nissan axle (well according to tests they reckon they have done anyway)
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

I did 2 rear R&P's and one front in the prado, but they were all due to my road driving, not offroad driving...

To be honest I have no idea why I keep going through them. Ever since I have rebuilt the engine it seems to be blowing them. All onroad as well. 2 of them were turning out of a driveway. That last one could have been from a compression lock but it has been slightly noisey for a while and I only happens once and a while. I barely use my brakes just down shift. All I know is I am over replacing diffs. I can't really be bothered putting chromoly parts in as the cost in doing that will be far greater than putting my patrol axles under. I don't think I will be braking them.

if ya do start breaking them, ya can always put chromoly in the patrol axles.

if the toyota ones are %50 stronger than the standard ones, imagine how much stronger the patrol ones will be after some chromoly.

also, keep a look out for some y61 diffs, they are slightly wider aparently.

all your answers are here...

Build strong diffs with this guys techniques and you'll have no issues.
I built my diff heads using the same methods and techniques, and have never broken a diff, that said, I don't have a lead foot or a v8
But I have seen my wheel turn more than 90degrees with the locker in and the other wheel fully bound in rocks and no breaks lol
This guy has built diffs for a lot of the top rockcrawlers/KOH Formula Toyotas etc in the US and has a very good name for building strong diffs.
I set the tooth pattern a little deeper than normal, and crank the side gear adjuster wheels to 150ft/lbs, this I think is the reason they are strong. Of course use good new bearings when you do it, I didn't use any chromoly gears, but if i did them again I probably would, and I'd get them nitrided too.
