Hmm middle of winter... many of the day trip tracks are closed in otago over winter. Someone may have a better idea but its likely to be low lying areas only.
Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..

Yea, put some all terrains on if coming down this time of year, all public places are closed off!

Bring your ski's as well.

There are the Ken Sibly and Mark Wilson "4WD South Island" books which list off road tracks and adventures throughout the South Island.

First one had "77 Off Road Adventures" and the second followed up with "93 new Off Road Adventures".

Books are still available but they are coming up 10-15 years old and some of the tracks have changed or closed so a little more research maybe required. Many also require more than one vehicle for safety.

The other more recent book where to travel is "Spot-X Off-Roading New Zealand" which is similar and sets out various tracks and routes through NZ. Bill Hohepa did the tracks for the South Island section of the Spot-X book.

Have a look at this site too - Pitched at adventure bikes, but was a great resource for my last South Island trip
