Need to modify 80 series trans to get 3rd gear lock up

Post by Diorama »

Due to info analysed from my previous posts I've decided I need to upgrade my transmission so that I get 3rd gear lock up. What I need to know is what parts I need to do this and the best place to get them. Happy to import if necessary.

I take it you mean torque converter lockup?
You need to locate the signal wire to the solenoid that engages the lockup.
Interrupt it and apply voltage to turn it on...
There are kits sold overseas. Bit expensive for what they are...

So what you are saying is that I don't need to spend big dollars to achieve this. All I need to do is find the signal wire and I am able to get my trans to lock up in 3rd gear. I have one of the first 80 series produced (1990). I don't know much about this except that my trans gets hot when towing and it has been suggested that I modify my trans so that I can get 3rd gear lock up. Lots of info needed as this is a mod I am going to do.

This will depend what model auto was fitted, there are two. The a440 which is hydraulically controlled.
And the a442 which is ecu controlled.... This one you can activate the control solenoid...
There will be a little metal tag on the side of the trans which will tell you what it is...

this is good info(above)
If you DO have the electronically controlled locup, then any reputable auto electrician will be able to identify the wire that controls the TC lockup, and run an override switch to a handy place near the gear lever for you.
In practice, you will need to remember to unlock the torque convertor before you change gears, as the trans shudders a bit when changing gears with TC locked. You will want to have 4th gear locked out(whilst driving in 3rd with TC locked) so that the trans doesn't change up unexpectedly.

BTW on my toyota car,( which has been wired to have a manual override for the torque convertor) i also had it wired to have a small indicator light on the dash that lets me know when I have the TC locked. so i won't forget.

Been reading the IH8MUD forums on this today. Apparantly some of the earlier 80s did have the A442 but were still hydraulic lock up not ECU activated. From what I've read the later model cruisers came out with the ECU activated A442. This means that there were perhaps 3 different transmissions fitted to these cruisers. The A440, the A442 hydraulic lock up and the A442 ECU lock up. I will have a look at mine tonight and see if I can determine what it is.

Just a throught ..
I would guess that a hydraulic controlled trans would not have a computer in the passangers foot well, that said have a look in the foot well and if theres a computer in thier it will proberly answer on how it is controlled

Under bonnet plaque says I have the A442F Trans. Couldn't see anything on the trans itself.

I don't think mines ECU driven. Wading through the IH8MUD forums it sounds like the early 80's with the A442F trans were all hydraulic control.
Can anyone confirm this.

Have ordered my new trans valve body from Rodney at Wholesale automatics in Aus. Very knowledgable guy. The A442F did come out in Hydraulic and ECU operated and to throw another spanner in the works some of the Hydraulically controlled ones were also linked to the cruise control and some were not.
My cruiser has cruise control but its not tied in with the trans. Rodney was able to determine which mine was by the wiring that is absent.
