KZJ78 reverse noise

My 93 Prado auto has developed a shudder when reversing with a bit of load (ie revering up hills etc)

Sounds like clunking or shuddering. I can't see anything and there doesn't seem to be any play in the driveshaft or pinion.

No problems going in forward.

I might add that my diff is probably on it's last legs... it's a wurrs a bit going forward... but that wouldn't cause the reverse shuddering would it ?

Any ideas?
