Got one down here if you get stuck. What's the rebuild kit worth?

Re: 80 Series Landcruiser A440F Auto Trans Whine

Post by suzolla »

Got a second hand one.

After doing the valve block gaskets and filter change have finally got the trans in my truck and taken it for a run, seems to work okay, only problem is that it has a whine, can hear it when in neutral and I rev the engine, does not appear to do it when in gear but stationary with engine running, but also whines when driving in all gears and appears to be engine speed related.

Any thoughts on what it might be.
Cheers

Bugger, I had a look online but it's not a common problem. Did you get the torque converter all the way onto the drive dogs? Was the gearbox hard to pull up onto the engine or did it just slip on and mate flange to flange?

Here's a link to a manual for the A440F/A442F.

Thanks for that, yes torque converter was right on before put trans up to motor, seemed to go together easily, will give a couple of transmission places a ring tomorrow.

Ok, wonder if it could be a bearing on one of the gearsets? If I'd known about this problem I would've told you because I don't like being dishonest about these things.

Churchill, all good, not trying to lay blame, after all it is a 2nd trans, just want to find out what it could be. Yes guessing it may be a bearing.

Spoke to a trans guy today, seems to think it may be a planertary gear noise which he says can happen if alot of towing in overdrive.
Going to take it in next week for him to have a listen and see what he thinks.
Parts to rebuild my one are about 3 weeks away.
Cheers
