Strengthening RE4R01A auto tranny

Post by mongoose007 »

Morning guys,

I'm unexpectedly "upgrading" my tranny from a RE4R01A to another RE4R01A. While it's out and accessible it what's worthwhile replacing/upgrading?

I'm already planning on seals and filter, and I'll speak to a tranny shop about the other consumables (clutch packs, filter, etc).

There seems to be a fair amount of advice on the manual equivalents, but little on the old slush buckets. Is that because most people are running manuals, or are there just not many aftermarket parts for RE4R01A's?

Cheers for your advice all!

It would appear that the major cause of failure in these (and other makes of) transmissions are over heating and over loading.

Over heating has been solved in the later vehicles by the addition of external oil coolers however the over loading is purely down to operator error.

There is a Topic here on ORE on how to install an over ride for the kick down and lockup on the torque converter
http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=34242&p=384669&hilit=torque+converter+lockup#p384669.

thus removing the major stress from the clutch packs and reducing over heating by the friction of the trans fluid.
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.

Brilliant, thanks crash. I was planning on getting round to a lockup controller, and already have an external cooler lined up. Guess I'll just talk to the experts about refreshing the clutch packs then :)

Blake, it's in a D21 terrano, TD27T.

I have one of their manual shift valve bodies in my trans. It is an RE4R03A so bigger but the VB are basically the same. Been running over 500hp through it and it works great.
Nissan Terrano coilovers, turboed VH45, Safari axles, and some other stuff.
