Dunno about your Hilux...

But i thought about doing the same on my Jeeps steering box when it was leaking from both the input and output shafts...

I was going to follow this video...
As simple yet f'ning complected as it looks...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=661ov4GIXAA

In the end, i bought a new box, that was only leaking from the output... and that seal was simple... no need to remove the innards...

Goggling Hilux Steering box pictures... yours seams somewhat similar...
but its anyones guess...

I had a leaking steering box on my LN106 hilux, there are a couple (maybe more) videos on youtube about how to pull the steering box apart, replace the seals and then put it back together.

After watching a couple of youtube videos I took my steering box to a shop and got them to fix it.

Being 25 years old the steering box not only needed new seals but also for the shaft to be rebuilt due to corrosion

I've had a crack at replacing the input seal on a Hilux box and managed to get to the same point as yourself. There's a bearing retainer plate which was impossible to undo..

In the end I just replaced the box with another one. Seems to be all good now.

Remove the curved tin plates held in by 2 screws and they all go back in there, you have to rock the shaft back and forth and push them down with a punch. The last few sit in the plates with some grease, just make sure there all in there if not buy some more from a bearing shop.

Yep there on the piston it will have to come out, remove the output shaft and it will just slide out.

Same with me managed to get all the bearings back in but then broke the plastic ring then tried putting the old one back in and broke that to. Ended up buying another one.
