4WD Insurance
I have had trouble finding someone to insure my 4WD, now that I have replaced the engine with the V6. On recommendation from a few on here I tried Barley Insurances Ltd.
http://www.barley.co.nz
I can't rate them highly enough. The cover is very comprehensive, covering both on and off road use. The policy also has public liability cover, and the ever important Rural Fire Service Liability Cover, for a small extra fee. A lot of people probably aren't even aware that they can be held liable for a rural fire that they had NOTHING to do with. Just being within 5 miles of it is enough.
I rang them yesterday. They emailed the documents to me, which I filled in and returned the same day. Very easy and hassle free. Highly recommended.

Don't get hung up on the cost because everyone is different.
It depends on the vehicle, the age, valve and the risk involved (ie alarm, garaged etc).
Insurance cost vary between towns and cities of residence and even suburbs so what one person gets for their dollar, another may have to pay $1.50 in say Auckland.
Also you have to take in the cover provided by the policy.........and remember that most insurance companies will take your money but not provide the off road cover that Barley's do.
Best to get your own quotes direct from Barleys. and yes they are a very good company to deal with, even when it comes to claims.

Mine is just over $500 p.a.
Covers the following:
1. Repair/replacement of vehicle in the event of a total loss both on and offroad, though not for competition events
2. Towing/recovery/storage
3. 60 rental car hire while your vehicle is being repaired/replaced
4. Trailers
5. 3rd party property damage up to $2 million
6. Theft of personal effects
7. Weight damage, caused by vehicle weight
8. Windscreens - onroad only
For an extra $67.50 p.a. you can ad on the Rural Fire Service Levy Protection, which covers you for up to $500,000.
I am pretty happy with this, as it gives me very good cover both on and off road. In fact, the policy is better than what I had previously through my bank.

I'm with State
3rd party only (cant justify paying 1500 a year plus 1500 excess if I crash)
I'm 18
Male
Turbo vehicle
Modified to a state where it needs certification
Covered Offroad
They said they couldn't give me insurance when I first rang up then I went to thier website and did a quote thing. A day later a guy from state in nelson branch gave me a ring and it turned out he was a hunter from waaaaay back so we had a good old yarn and he was happy to give me insurance.
Was $230 PA
then no claims bonus after a year and is now $190 PA
So recommend State a larger company that you know is really stable.

Son of a bitch. I had my old car and contents with them and they refused me insurance for the safari so I canceled everything and got it through my father with ami with me down as the primary driver. Think its about 500 bucks per year, haven't paid him back for it yet though so i'm not sure.
National Auto club wanted to charge me $1500 for just third party, wankers.

He is more likely to be a specialized broker. It is not likely for him to run his own insurance company. He is getting these policies covered through other providers or reinsurance companies. Its a complex industry and I can spend ages through the details.
As long as he standsby his word, its all fine. How he gets it covered is his problem. I know a few people who are with him happily. I am not because I am happy with my current provider.

Well the dust has now settled on my little incadent and i have given myself enough time to be able to write an objective letter regarding insurance.
I used Barley Insuirance to insure my Jeep with full cover, i found them to be great and was able to drive offroad with the confort that if anyting happend I was covered.
Like many 4x4 enthusiests broken lights, ented pannels and scratched paint was just an accepted thing and in my case many of the trip battle scars got pushed out and i never made a calim.
The came the fist of a sereis of unfortunate events, my neighbour decided to build a fence between our two properties. The fence was quite tall and caused problems with the normal use of our drive way as it used to lean over toward our property about 200mm depending on the heat of the day.
A little bit of care usually allowd me to negotaite the fenceline however on one particular occasion i was distracted and clipped the fence causing a bit of damage to the rear and the rear tailgate (made of fibreglass) broke.
I put in a claim to the insurance company and took the jeep down to the local panel and paint shop who repaierd it. i instructed them not to go overboard in the pannel work as the likleyhood of future battle scars were likley. They however did a great job and the rear quarter looked a little out of place.
After the repairs were done I notivced an electrical issue that was causing a 60amp fuse to pop so i took it in to Contanental for testing, no fault was found and after a couple of days i was sent on my way.
A couple of days later i headed up to Spring Hill Farm and upon turning in to the drive eralised there was a bit of flooding over the main drive way. I decided to take it easy and see if i could make it to the farm house however as i nosed in it became apparent that the water was a litle too deep. The water came to just above the tyres so i decided to back out. To my dissmay at this point i eralised that the jeep was floating
this may have been due to the fact i was not carrying a lot of weight and the jeep was empty. I tried to gun the engine a little in reverse hoping that i would gain a little traction and make it back to dry land however the engine started to splutter and cough. I found this a little stange as atr this stage the water was nto all that high.
The engine stalled out and the jeep finally touched ground where it was then retreived and taken to warkworth where io called Barley and informed them of the situation, lumley then sent an accessor to view the jeep and tyo my dissmay they wrote it off.
While the jeep was in the care of the insurance companies care several items went missing. Amongst these were a chunk of change that was in the ash tray, the tool kit in the rear, one of the fire extinguishers and several other items.
I asked the insurance company for my offroad tyres back as i had the road tyres here, they said that they had accessed it with the tyres and this would be reflected in the settlement. They however offered the jeep back to me at a reasonable figure so that i could recover the snorkel, lift kit and other additions as well as the tyres. The process of getting the settlement from them took a lot longer than expected and i was left short for nearly 2 months.
I decided to purchase a new car and take the time to decide to either rebuild the jeep or replace it. after selecting a car i called Barley and arrnaged the insurance. they then gave me the detail and i drove away. I later received a call from Barly stating that Lumley General the insurance
underwriter was now refusing to cover me. this is after they accepted my cover. After lengthy negotiations they reversed this decision and offerd to insure me to the end of the year. As expected i decliend their offer as i had already suffered financially and have taken my business else where.
I have been rebuilding the jeep and in the process have found what caused the engine to stall out, it appears that the little rubber seal that is supposed to be in the distributor had been removed and it appears this was done when the vehicle was being serviced at contanental. Further the flooding I was caught up in was i beleive classified as a civil emergency and claiemd quite a number of cars/vehicles.
At no stage have eiother party offered to reimburse me for the losses incurred while they sorted out their settlements, nor have they ever offered to replace or refund me for the items that were taken from the vehicle while it was in their care.
As i pointed out to Lumley and Barley, i have been driving for 25 years and have had 3 accidents that have resulted in an insurance claim including these ones and although 2 of these were close i think its prety obvious that the latter was in part a result of the unreliablility of the vehicle after the earleir accident.
I would like to say that although Jon at Barly was very helpfull and provided very good support the underwriters Lumley were useless and in my opinion have some serreious performance matters they should be dealing with.

If you are part of the NZFWDA mention this to them, also if you have done any 4wd club "offroad" training, If you have done the NZQA training thru mike mention this as well (or send them a copy of the certificate).
I have found if you ring up and just ask for it they are likely to say know but if you explain about the membership and the training they are happier. also good on file if there are problems later.
Also helps to tell them you aren't using it for offroad racing or competitions, they are happier if you explain if its for organised club trips.

int this particular instance it was not a clu trip, just going out to have a chat with the guy who owns springhill farm. I was on a tarsealed driveway and had been there 2 days prior. It was only when the vehicle floated to the side that the water got deep real fast.
I am a member of the Manukau 4WD Club and have an NZFWDA card. I have participated in several recreational 4X4 trips and al;though have taken part in a couple of minor competitions really just take the family offroad on the club trips.
The vehicle i purchased and were knocked back on was not a 4WD veshicle and was purchased as a run around. being without a vehicle for any length of time is a real pain and although i had a rental car having this for atleast 2 months seemed to be a little excessive.
I will mention it to NZFWDA and have the baer bones of a report regarding the issue.
It is a shame there aer not many other insurance companies out there catering for us 4X4 enthusiests, seems that the only company that can offer comprehensive coverage is lumley via Barley Insurance.
Neither offered a long term solution to this matter.

With regard to the items that were stolen from the vehicle....the first point of contact should of been the Police. You should of reported the theft.
Im guessing the insurance company & the company storing the vehicle would of taken you a bit more seriously when the Police beacame involved.
You could still do this as there is NO statute of limitation in NZ.

In regards to your personal belonging being removed, the Insurance company, would not be liable as it would have been in the care of the Salavge operator, this would be classed as a second claim, as it did not
happen at the same time as the water damage.
Most Insurance companys will Total loss a water damaged as the unknown
factor of damage and also on going problems, make these kind of claims
uneconominical to repair, in regards to removing wheels, snokels,
your vehicle would have been valued with these items, removal
would lower the Market Value, it can be done but only with prior arrangement with your insurer
wondering how i know these thing?? work as an Motor Assessor.

Even though the vehicle was at the salvage company & they were looking after it.They were acting as an agent of the insurance company & the Insurance company would still be liable for security of the vehicle & its contents. The salvage company was working for the insurance company NOT the insured.
The insurance company should of paid out for the loss of goods then gone the salvage company for this loss.
most times when the vehicle has been salvaged, this has been done before a claim has been lodged, so this is on the owner of the vehicle
to arrange, unless he or she has contacted there insurance company on an 0800 number and they arrange for salvage.
not all salvage operators are Insurance contracted.
insurance companies have little say in costs or locating if not contacted.
most times at an accident scene there are several towies applying for
your tow, unless advised by your insurer, it will be your choice.
most times if it is a not injury accident personal items are removed
by friends or familiy.
not sticking up for ALL Insurance companies just stating the facts.
i has seen time were a Assessor has been appointed 3 week after the
accident because of admin problems, this starts with lack of details on a claim form, your broker not sending info asap, claims handlers misunderstanding location of vehicle etc
the best way is to log a call on the 0800 as most of these are recorded to ascertain correct details given.
