'90 2LT Surf Gearbox Problems?

Last night me and a mate went out to the waimak for a quick play in the mud, when we started heading back i went to change out of 4wd and it wouldn't (dam ADD).

We drove past the gate that closes at 10pm befor we were locked in and tried getting it out of 4wd drive there. i tried everything and it wouldn't work, my mate said this happened to him and he put it in reverse and put his foot down and it disengaged. I tried it and it worked but something gave. Sounded like gears stripping to me.

When i was driving home i noticed strange noises coming from the gearbox area. under load - no noises, light loads - rattling noises and engine braking in 2nd gear - a horrible stripping sorta sound. Anyone know what this could be? Other than the noises the truck still drives 100% normal, any help would be much appreciated.

Are you sure its from the gearbox? I couldn't think what might strip in tthe transfer case but I could imagine you might have stripped a spline on the drive flange at one of the wheels.

If you get really stuck and you need it then you can bring the truck out and I can take a look for you... failing that I'd be checking the front diff and drive flanges for a breakage.

Oh, you can always force the ADD into 4WD and leave it there, and fit manual hubs... ats kind of the simple over-ride for the system (which, to be fair, is normally pretty reliable).

Thanks for the advice steve, will have a wee look although im not sure what im looking for, would be great if you could take it for a quick spin sometime and see what you think.

As for manual hubs i had already planned on getting some its the second time its happened but the 1st time wasn't as bad.

Just went out and had a quick look, turned the driveshaft going from the front diff to the transfer case and it rattled, is this normal?

No, driveshafts should be silent... You mean the driveshaft rattled? What happens when you try to get sideways play out of the driveshaft? You might have busted the centre of the UJ at the diff end, or worse the CV joint at the gearbox end. The UJ is an easy cheap fix, but the CV is a little more expensive and fiddly...

when i turned it round there was a rattling noise coming from in the transfer case, are the cv joints in these any harder to replace than in a car, have done a few in cars, will check for sideways play in the driveshaft in the morning and let you know.

had a look at the driveshaft this morning, theres no play in it what so ever, just the rattling noise when i spin it. when you say to check the drive flanges are you meaning the splines on the end of the cvs? dont want to go pulling to much stuff apart if i dont need to.

hey dude sounds like you have broken an axle inside diffhead which is bolted to the cv there is a short one drivers side and long on other just done mine bugger of a job but not too bad good luck..........
