Petrol surfs

Post by surf_tomo »

Being a ex owner of the infamous 2lte surf I am looking around for a petrol truck. Still quite liking the surfs I was wondering if the petrol models (2 litre) have the same head cracking, and overheating syndrome as the 2.4 diesels?? Any mechanical problems or issues with the petrols? and would anyone be able to tell me how fuell (in)efficient they are??

cheers, Tom.

Thanks for the great info guys I found one on TM, but yeah they dont come up for sale very often, unlike the pages of 2.4 turbo diesels.

I have a 3 liter v6 surf and love it. The engines have been know to do head gasgets but they where recalled a few years ago so you shouldn't have a problem with that now. Like the 2L they go for ever as well if they have been looked after. Mine has 285000 genuine k's on it and doesn't use oil between changes. They have alot more power than the 2l which will struggle to beat the 2lt. I take it you are looking at a early 90's surf in which case you will be looking at the injected 2l (3ye) with i think is ok but i wouldn't tough the old carbed 3y's as they have no power and use amazing amounts of gas!

Im not sure about the fuel consumption on the 3ye but my v6 surf gets 15L per 100k on the open road and worse in town but is has the power that the other surf engines don't so im happy. Hell gas is cheap compared to fixing a cracked head!!!

How much are you looking at spending and what mods are you looking at doing to it?

Thats dead right the cost of fixing a head can be huge. Um I have around 3500 to buy something with, and would be looking at tires snorkle and bars firstly as I do alot of hunting, then sus lifts etc later on. I suspect that the v6 will be a bit to costly to run, but then again so was my old diesel so I will have to do the figures, what mods are done to yours pete?

cheers for all the usefull info guys :D

hi there. is a surf the only option for you? as most of the 3lv6 terrano's come with factory lsd and easy to lift

Hi, no it is not the only option, It was just after owning one and liking them, wondered how the petrol models shaped up against the diesels. I am truck less at the moment so I am all ears :D :D

Interesting about the terrano LSD, do the diesel ones have it too? Im still after a petrol, but my mate had a diesel terrano

cheers Tom

I think you'll find the v6 surfs and the ikz surfs also have a factory LSD and with pretty much the same suspension set up they are just as easy to do small lifts, nothing to exciting with either of them unless you rip out the torsion bars, there are lots of threads on surfs vs terrano's i like the surfs because I'm a Toyota kinda guy but others would argue. I think it comes down to what you like best and what is in your price range.. Both have good and bad sides
Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!
