1993 SSR-G, 2LTE Valves...

Post by eejay99 »

Hi All,

1st Post, hoping for some advice from more experienced Surf owners =)

1993 Surf-SSRG, 2lte motor, 130000kms.

Blowing a bit of bluey-black smoke under acceleration from idle to 2000 rpm, some oil in the turbo pipe near throttle mechanism. Compression down to 340 360 360 360 Psi, leakage around 20 - 30%. Signs of oil between the head and valve cover on throttle (inlet side?) and a slight knock or ping which I am beginning to obsess over! No sign of coolant contamination in the oil, and doesnt overheat, so hopefully not the head....

I am looking to undertake an overhaul and try and regain some performance. Based on these symptoms I was thinking it was probably the valve seals or the piston rings (hopefully not..) . Not sure about the oil in the turbo line though? Any clues here I am overlooking?

I am looking to delve into the head to check the condition of the valves/seals. Before I take the first step does anyone know if the 2lte has easily accessible valves/seals form the top down, or will I have to remove the head from the block to effect their removal?

Also any info on the 2lte valve tolerances, and torque requirements for the valve-cover bolts and headbolts would be good.

much appreciated,

first off you need a catch can. that wil catch a lot of that oil thats coiming out of your intake piping. 2lt's are bad for it due to poor rocker cover. your proberly geting a fair bit of blowby with worn pistons so it may pay to open up the breather line a bit (DO NOT get a restrictive catch can).
provided its starting ok then just run it as is, they can last a long time even with lowish compression.

hopefully you have allready got rid of the EGR and EGR butterfly (in the intake).

Cheers for the heads up on the turbo related stuff, next chance I get I will try blanking the breather to see if oil still ends up in the delivery from the turbo above the intake manifold, this would indicate a leak from the turbo seal itself wouldn't it?

DO NOT BLANK OFF BREATHER ! ! !

pull the hose off and leave it loose and seal where it went into the intake.
if you block off the breather pipe you will blow the engine and turbo seals out and you will have oil leaks from everywhere.
clean the oil up as best you can otherwise it will take 5000km's or so for it to go.
also i'm not a fan of people driving around blowing oil all over the road, so you might as well just get a catch can (with 15mm or 1/2" connectors) fitted from day one.
they are a very common fix for surfs.
