replacing 3L with 5L in Hiace Van

Post by ike »

Hi Guys,

Wondering if anyone out there can help me...

The old man's van has finally given up on him (at 550kms with no major work required during it's whole life!!!) Well, it hasn't even really given up as in "gone bang", just injector pump leaking, losing compression (probably becasue of his shoddy servicing reigime), glow plugs stuffed etc so he is thinking about just replacing with a whole new motor.

Looking around on TM and through a couple of mates we have come accross a mint 5L ready for transplant;-)

Question is:
Is there any wiring that would need to be wired? or is it all mechanical (mechanical work is piece of piss but wiring is tricky for me)
Does the 5L bolt up to the 3L gearbox no worries? and is the flywheel bolt pattern the same etc? radiator hose outlet/inlet in a similar position or am i going to have problems matching up the hoses to fit?
Mounting positions all the same?

Basically can i just unbolt the old, bolt up the new, connect a few wires for the starter, gauges etc and we are away? or is there more to worry about? never worked on a L series before and you guys seem really onto it so better to ask you than find out at night while under the bloody thing with a $3800 lump of unusable iron next to me on the floor;-)

Thanks heaps in advance!

Just can't wait for the mortgage repayments to reduce a bit so i can get a wagon and enjoy some mud-slinging with you guys!!

I put a late model 5l in place of my 3 l in my lux, pretty straight forward

all the bolt on locations, manifold, mounts, gearbox, flywheel etc are identical

make sure ya get a 5L, not a 5LE which has electronic injection

I used the wiring and alternator off the old engine and ya will need to change oil pressure and water temp senders as they will work with ya wiring and gauges

other things like ya thermostat housing will probably need to be swapped also

any question, don't hesitate to pm me

mate that's awesome, exactly what i wanted to hear!

So pretty much as long as it's 5L and not a 5LE (with computer and electronics) then it's just simply taking the old block out and replacing it with the new one;-)

Sounds possible to me!

Thanks

Yeah, pretty easy really, forgot to mention check the sump as well, ya may need to swap it and the oil pick up over if the bump is in a different place
