diff delema again

Post by pagar »

Hello Lads and ladesses, I have a BJ73, I have upgraded rear diff to a LSD from a bj74 and have a ARB on its way for the front. as per normal I have tyre rub issues (35" tyres) and am humming and haring about what to do either get some 2" back space rims ex US or have some made here, or put 60 series diffs in. what I need to know is if I bnuy 60 series diffs A) will my locker and LSD diff heads fit in them and B) will I need to move the spring mount plates on the housing or are they the same? any help would be apreciated. cheers

Yep its the same diff head if you swap to 60 series diff housings, theres a complete set with cable lockers on TM at the moment.

You could put wheel spacers onto your existing hubs or have the centres of your rims shifted to reduce the backspace, Jumpers had the centres flipped to reduce the backspace on his 40 series

I know of a set of 15x7in rims in Kaikoura with the centres flipped - probably a reasonable price. I can ask if you're interested...

Seen this?

It seems that the spring mounts are further apart on the 60 series. Easy to grind off & re-weld the mounts on the rear axle housing where the springs sit wider apart (I've done that on my FJ40), but the front springs are closer together and axle has the mount too close to the diff, so you cant move it inwards. There's a bit of talk about "notching" the pumpkin - I guess they mean ginding it out & maybe reinforcing it somehow, but it's beyond my skill level. It may be easier on the 70 series than the 40 though. I think the 70 series axles are about 50mm wider than the 40, and the 60 series about 50mm wider still. You may be better to look at 80 series axles which are wider still...

Wopass has got a thread and pic's somewhere of welding new front spring perches onto the 60 series axles he put into his rusty old 40 series, he did a SOA with them but still probably worth a look if you can find the thread?

He did it with springs over though - It would be tough to do if you stayed SUA

thanks for the tip off of the 60's for sale. So If I manage to get them is there anyone you guys know of in Auckland or not too far away that has them fitted that I can go and have a look at? and other than spring mounts how much else would I need to do? and as I am doing mounts I presume I may as well go spring over and remove my body lift kit? oh now I am lost.... but would work out the same I supose if I buy them and fit them and sell my LSD rear end and sell off the ARB and sell my spacers etc will try to win auction tomorrow and see how I get on.
