80 series questions

Post by cornfarmer »

Gidday , just sold my 70 series and got a 91 vx ltd 1HDT auto 159000km on the clock, factory electric winch, and a whole heap of buttons that I have no idea what they do.

1. What does the little stork under the indicator do? It says A/D and when pulled A/D comes up on the dash lights.

2. The fan only works when you push the demister button and comes on full noise only. Faulty buttons or is there a trick to it?

3. Whats the deal with the compass's in them? Are they any good or just a decoration?

4. What are the hand throttles like, and how many revs should it go up to when pulled right out?

5. Do they have a computer, and where is it?

6. Do you have to do anything to the electrics under the bonnet before playing in mud/water? (Bonnet depth)

7. Going to do the big ends on the next service , any idea on the price for parts?

8. Whats the suspension button for? It says sports and normal, does it give more articulation when in sports or does it stiffen the suspension for better on road performance?
Any other info is greatly appreciated.
Nothings a problem if you don't give a f#ck.

Cruse control press the button on the end and it will turn on, pull level it cancels the cruse, flick up speed up, flick down set speed and then coast.

Cheers mate, yeah it's got a draw bar and all the factory bumpers etc. Will eventually put a bar on the front and back as it's got no tow hooks.
Have you heard of people taking a wire off the gearbox so you can use low range without the center diff lock coming on?

Anyone got an idea of what it costs to do a timing belt and bigends in the 1HDT?

if you do it yourself about $150.00 for both

if you get a workshop to do it, about $700.00 for both

How easy do the bigend bearings come off the crank/conrods? Do they lift easy or are they a pain?

piss easy if you know what your doing, not good if you dont as you can make a mess and screw it up. remember that they need to be spotless clean and pre lubed when they go on.

1 drain oil

2 remove gearbox support brakets

3 remove sump (no gasket, just siloconed on)

4 rotate crank by hand to get number one cylinder at the bottom of its stroke

5 remove big end cap and botom half of bearing cap

6 rotate crank slightly to push piston up a little then rotate crank back the other way to give clearance between conrod and crank to remove top half of bearing shell

7 inspect closely the shell that has come out to see what size it is

8 measure crank to make sure they are correct size

9 get new shells

10 fit perfectly clean, lubed shell to conrod then rotate crank up to keep it in position then fit bottom half to cap and bolt to rod.

11 tourque to (double check this as im only going off memory) 37nm then 90deg

12 repeat for 2-3-4-5-6

13 clean sump and poo back on with new flash silicone from toyota or use threebond

14 fit gearbox brace brakets back on and tighten

15 fill with oil and new filter

16 start it up and hope i havent missed anything
