Looking to put 60 series diffs/axles under a 74 40. Anyone have some for sale at good price?
Looking around online it looks poss to put a five speed in too but lengthens the wheelbase a bit.. anyone have experience with this? Save the little motor screaming when doing more than 80Km/h but is it worth the extra effort?

5 speed gearbox fits easy if you have the gearbox mounts on the crossmember. Earlier 40's (probably yours) had the rear mount on the bellhousing so you'd need to fab up a gearbox mount. It's not much of an overdrive, but knocks about 500rpm off at 100kph. If you use 60 series rear springs, you move the axle the right distance (about 90mm) to match the extra gearbox length so you can keep the same rear D/S. The springs are longer, so it needs the rear shackle mounts flipped around, and slightly longer shackles. You also need to move the upper shock mounts to the rear side of the crossmember. The extra wheelbase makes quite a difference on steep climbs and descents, and the extra width of the 60 series rear axle housing makes it heaps more stable. Since you have to lengthen the front D/S anyway - consider moving the front axle forwards as well - a spring flip gives about 95mm, or 60 series front springs give about 40mm. Putting a 60 series front axle in is difficult, as the spring perches need to go on the diff pumpkin.

reving high and only 4 speed with 31" wheels

no and recently found out it may actually be a long wheelbase diff inj the rear too.. recent failure of warrant got me pissed of with previous owner (and VTNZ who had passed it just before I bought it)

I had a 75 FJ40 with 350 and 33s
it would easily pull 160kph without any effort and definitely not screaming its arse off
I cant remember the exact way to check ratio but its got something to do with the way you describe it.
mark wheel and driveshaft and roll one revolution of wheel and count how times shaft goes round
should be a 4.1 ration diff
even with 31s it shouldnt really scream that much
check front as well to make sure they the same otherwise you in trouble

open diff lift one wheel clear. Mark the diff pinnion and the tyre, then rotate the tyre 1 complete rotation and multiply by two the rotations of the pinion (allows for the drive and gearing spining one wheel) 4.1 ratio will come back as 2.05 (a smidgeon) pinion rotations
LSD, lift both wheels if it is a tight pack (if not proceed as for open) Mark the diff pinnion and the tyre then rotate the tyre 1 complete rotation. 4.1 will come back as 4.1 rotations (thats two smidgeons
