What are they?

Post by Slideways »

On the BJ73, in the hose coming from the brake booster/servo there are 2 filter type canisters roughly the size of my fist. One of them is underneath the brakebooster with a sensor in it. Are they a filter of some sort and what is the sensor for? I doubt it is even wired up since I no longer have the 3b motor fitted.

The reason I ask is because the ones in my cruiser are looking pretty stuffed/rusted and was wondering if I could just remove them and run a line straight from the inlet manifold as per normal set ups? If they are a filter they could be full of 24yrs of crap and may be causing the brakes to have a... "useless" feel to them

They are vacuum canisters for the vacuum assist on the clutch and one for the brakes. The sensors are to let you know when you have no vacuum which means the brakes and/or clutch will be harder to operate. You could probably ditch the clutch one but the brake one is pretty handy  As your truck was a diesel then there was no manifold vacuum for you to use. Thats what the pump on the back of the alternator does. You'll find that is where the hoses to those canisters used come from. Since you've changed to a petrol then i can't see any reason for you not to be able to run vacuum off the manifold.

Cheers for the quick reply. Yep its currently just hooked up to the inlet manifold since its running the petrol motor, but still using the canisters for some reason. I bought it with the conversion already done so but wasn't sure why the canisters will still used.
