H brake adjustment 80 series

Post by Flash2004 »

I guess they're all the same but just in case my 80 series has a drum brake inside the rear rotors for its parking brake. I saw it had an adjuster in there like a normal drum brake when I was replacing a wheel stud once. How do you get at the adjuster to adjust it? I took a wheel off and I see there's a larger hole in the face of the drum but can't see in there. I rotated it 360 degrees gradually but could feel nothing in there like an adjuster wheel. What is the drum please anybody? How do I do it without removing the rotor again? cheers, Gordon

sounds like the same stupid handbrake drum on my old LJ71  .... new old one just has drums   , there should be a rubber bung on the back of the stone guard thingy and a hole on the back that you can use to adjust them (theres a wheel thingy inside)

I couldn't find any openings or rubber bungs on the inside Jerry, plus there's the shock mount bracketry in the way - although I didn't look at the front side too closely - the floor was too grubby! I think it might have to be done from the wheel side through that hole but if so, I'll need to know what "o'clock" the hole has to be set at to line up with the adjustment wheel. thanks, Gordon

 go back to doing something you know how to do jerry

when you took the wheel off that hole in the rotor (should have a rubber gromet in it) is for adjusting the park brake, it has to be at the bottom and if you use a light you will see the adjuster in there, back the cable off at the handle in the cab then adjust at the wheel as per normal with a screw driver by rotating it till the shoes just touch. then re adjust at the lever in the cab so you have a small amount of slack so it doesnt wear the shoes.

An update, couldn't find the adjusters - or feel them at least. Took it to the garage and had it done.
