fj 40 height increase
Re: fj 40 height increase
Longer shackles on the front will affect steering caster and make it wander around the road more. Note that you only increase the height by half the extra shackle length, because the axle is mounted roughly half-way along the springs - so you will only gain 25mm in height, but will have the shackles 50mm lower at the front - and those long shackles will find a lot of rocks! At the back it's no real problem, as you are coming off the obstacles.
The best way to fit bigger tyres is by aggressive use of a disc-grinder to remove the metal that's in the way - but will only let you go to 33in tyres with standard suspension unless you limit suspension "up" travel with longer bump-stops, or remove / re-shape the top of the wheel guards. Also, the 40 will get pretty "tippy" if you lift it too high.
To effectively run 35's, you'll want more power, and more importantly - BETTER BRAKES! I'd strongly recommend you stay with your 33's and invest in things like disc brakes, power steering, and maybe a rear lockright before getting too ambitious with bigger rubber. Suspension lifts get expensive and there are many ways to do it, so you need to be sure of what you want first. And if you lift it - you want to consider wider axles too - 60 series are easy to put in the rear, but not an easy fit in the front unless you do the full SOA
By the way - where are you? There's lots of 40's around - so there's probably spmeone local you can compare things with..
