Toyota Hilux / Surf diff lock for sale.

Post by SupraLux »

Last one I have, $525. Brand new 'Lokka' brand diff lock. Suits Toyota 8" diff (yes, you could fit this to your Hiace van... but why on earth would you? :) )

Its an auto locker rather than an air locker, there is plenty of information on here about them if you search, would be ideal for the front of your surf if its an ln60 solid axle but will not fit if its an ln61 with the smaller independant front diff (would fit the back of both though)

Correct me if im wrong steve (or anyone else) just trying to help as your not on here that often.

yip, is solid front, read a fair bit about em, the never ending debate of front locker vs rear locker, rear is l.s.d, so wouldnt mind front locker, and i like the idea of a front locker pulling the truck rather than the rear pushing the truck, and i guess could just swap em over if didnt like the setup

Yep Dave - you're right... any 8" 2-pinion diff (not an LSD diff, they require a different model)...

However it may be a moot point, as I think it might be sold already :)

front lockers are great, rear lockers are great, people love both so why not flag the debate and just get both.. :D

[quote="rangimotors"]would be ideal for the front of your surf if its an ln60 solid axle but will not fit if its an ln61 with the smaller independant front diff (would fit the back of both though) [quote]

You can fit an Autolocker to the front easily enough and it won't change the drivability on road as much as having one in the back, you do run the risk of blowing a front Birfield. It can be blown in a standard open diff but with a front locker it can be a lot easier to do and probibly done on request if you want to supply a birfield.

With this in mind I would put a locker in the back and tighten the LSD unit and install in the front.

You can get stronger birfields or carry a spare, the seals, grease, rag's and the tools. I have had one go with an open front diff and it made turning a problem, have been with others when they have broken a birfield and had to pull it wasting most of a day to get the bloody thing out and back in  and been out with someone with a selectable who blew one and no one had a spare so we had to remove it and drag him through stuff and 3wd drive it until the other side broke (not that long really) pull the other side and 2wd and drag it the rest of the way.

Lucky there was a well setup cruiser with us the only other heavy truck was a Safari

I have an Auto locker in the back and LSD up front and have ordered stronger birfields from the US to replace when the next one goes. The drivability with a auto locker in the back is affected but you soon get used to it and from my experience larger tyres and a longer wheel base reduce these bad habits.

It is a cheap enough locker and nothing wrong with them for the extra traction they will give you they are worth while but you do want to have some spare parts and tools if you use it in the front diff.
Legal disclaimer: Any information I may have provided is worth exactly what you paid me for it.

this all being true, i never broke anything in my surf with a front locker, was probably very close a few times when i first got it but soon learned how to drive with them and had no issues. If your rough as hell or running huge tyres with big power then you might start breaking them but then you just upgrade what your breaking, eg longs isn't that how we grow as drivers and improve our trucks, drive it to our limits and replace whats holding us back/breaking.

if putting a lock rite or similar auto locker in front its a good idea to fit manual hubs so you can disconnct the diff for on road driving .
If you have ADD front diff youll be able to switch of the front diff when off road...a front locker will increase you turning circle especially in slippery conditions.

Since its sold I'm going to ask a slightly off topic question...

Are these Auto lockers different for floating and semi floating diffs???

Think they are but... am hoping one of you tells me I can transfer the one out of my semi-floating 40 into the full floating 60 series diff :?:

Not sure why Steve asked if I had a full floating or semi floating diff when I bought it then???

Anyway - It's all good.

Right, he may have wanted to point out I needed an open Diff head to install into. Makes sense.
