Hey all, I'm just starting to plan my own long-term project now that the daughters trucks are nearly sorted. I need advice and opinions on which Toyota diffs will be the best to put under a Suzuki Escudo (probably 5Dr for the extra length and stability) in a coil-sprung, long-arm suspension type set-up.

Eventually I would like low gearing and either lockers or tight LSDs. The engine will have ample power to run heavyish running gear and 33 or 35 inch rubber.

I've been offered a pair of FJ40 Landcruiser diffs, but don't know if they would be ideal, as I know nothing about the Toyota stuff. What suggestions can you offer as to the best diffs to use, and why? ie. pros and cons of the different Toy diff's?

pretty much hilux or cruiser...

lux = 8 inch nugget so more ground clearance, plenty of diff ratio options and mods like wide axle conversion, longfields etc. nuggets are front offset to drivers side, rear is centred. lux front diff will be disc brake already.

cruiser = 9ish inch nugget little less clearance on the nugget but bit more heavy duty, same story with diff ratios and longs, wide axle etc. diff nuggets are front and rear on drivers side. front diff will be drum brake on the 40 and if goin 60, 70 etc series, it'll be disc...

so that'll pretty much help ya line up your clearance with sumps, fuel tank, transfer outputs and other bits.. comes down to price too...

hope that gives a little guidance.. holla if need more clarification or info/answers...

Exactly, that's why I asked about the 40 series, 'cos I can get a pair of them for nix.

Power-wise I'm looking at a 3.5 or 4.0L BMW V8, so should be able to turn whatever I put under it, but if there are better options than the 40s I'd rather wait until I can afford to buy a pair that will suit me better in the long term.

High pinion? does that just mean the pinion shaft is mounted higher in the housing to reduce prop-shaft angle?

High pinions are stronger in the front diff because the crown is reverse cut so the teeth are pushing on the strong side of the teeth.
They also have the advantage of a drive shaft that is in a straighter line and higher up out of the shit.
