Removing EGR Pipe 1KZ-TE

Post by oldblue »

Has anyone removed there EGR pipe on a 1KZ-TE Motor, are there any side effects ? I removed mine, and while at idle it puffs out a smoke ball about every approx 10 seconds, rest of the time its clear. also driving down hill with engine breaking it do's this. Any thoughts on this.

Yes I did mine when I replaced my head.
I TIGged up the bowl where it enters the inlet manifold and then blended it all with a die grinder to get a good spherical shape.
I have had no problems like you describe since the new head.
However when the head was cracked it blew white smoke under load and once revved, after idling
Are you sure that both ends of the pipe are securely sealed?
Have you disconnected the two(?) electrical senders from the EGR Valve?

I left the electrical senders pluged in and only made and fitted alloy plates between the exhaust manifold / crossover pipe/ and inlet manifold.

What color smoke?
Mine runs a bit rougher when cold and i had some idle problems from knocking a sensor on the fuel pump during removal, but it runs and idles good when warm/hot.

only one electrical plug on the EGR .The other 2 VSV values are part of the soft stop system . EGR VSV can be disconnected and removed as you have blanked off both ends of the pipe.

try taking out the throttle butterfly as engine did get air from egr system which is now blocked off. this will also drop you're egt's. - the light blue smoke is probably oil which will be getting sucked past the rings form the additional vacuum cause by the egr sys being blocked off which should go once the butterfly is removed. hope this helps

ok. may not be the cuase of the smoke but i would recomend pulling it out as it's only there to make the egr system work.

How hard is this butterfly to remove? Have had the small hose that controls the EGR thingee blocked off so next step will be this butterfly dohickey and maybe a small plate to block it for good.

you remove the throttle body by removing the alloy intake pipe then remove the for stud's and then the throttle body will come off you then will have to drill/grind the tail of the two small screw's holding the large butterfly off to allow the screw's to be removed the pull the butterfly out and put the throttle body back in & the intake pipe. i would also block it with a plate as the valve's can leak/stick open.

What is the point in removing the butterfly? What does it achieve?

It is designed to help aid smooth shut-down as I understand it.
I don't see how it will detract from air flow as when you have the injection wide open the butterfly is too.

Please correct me if I have missed something.

yes you are right at full throttle there is no difference but over the rest of the throttle position it dropped my egt's by an average of 75deg, as you still get full throttle air flow which helps the engine run cooler & spool the turbo. as for shut down(start up as well) it made little diff as it's a relatively small engine, if you look at most diesel's that don't have a egr system you won't find a butterfly. lager truck diesel's i believe have a butterfly to aid in startup & shut down due to the larger forces from the compression. if you have a look at my intercooling thread you will notice i welded a tube inplace of the throttle body then smoothed all the intake & welded up all the egr holes and made a remote throttle body for the tps which droped my temps down further,i then wound up the fuel 1/4 turn on the spill valve, my idle egt is now around 50degc(was 150 degc) and full throtle get's to around 700degc(never new as was still climing & 850degc), with my temp probe about 1/2 way between eng & turbo. hope this answers you question.
