hilux diff codes

Post by J_Dub »

is the diff code relevant to both ends on a solid axle model?
mine is g254
4.5 4 pinion, im wanting to buy a locker, as the rear is l.s.d that will be going to the front, and the front open diff to the back, so is my front 4 pinion aswell? ive heard most a the time the fronts are 2 pinion?????????

do i have to pull apart my diffs first to be sure?

Hi,
If your diff code ends in 4 and the rear diff is a LSD then the rear diff head has been changed sometime in the past.
To check what the front one is you can look in through the oil level hole with a small torch while slowly turning the drive shaft, if it is a 2 pinion one and you look closely you should be able to see the spider gear on the end of the axle sometimes and then it will be obscured as it is turned and then reappear again.
If it is a 4 pinion or LSD you will not be able to the spider gear.
If you know that the rear is an LSD you should also look at the rear the same way, if it looks the same as the front then the front will be 4 pinion, if it is different then the front will be 2 pinion.

Have posted this instead of replying to your PM as others may be interested. Hope this helps work out what you have got.

Cheers
Tim
