Rage exhausts for 80 Series Landcruiser - any good?

Post by Ben »

I've got myself a `91 80 Series with a 12 valve 1HD-T and I'm looking at a 3" exhaust so I can wind the fuel up to get a bit more poke for towing the boat.

Has anyone tried the rage 3" bolt on exhaust?

How loud are they?? I'm over having loud exhausts these days. I'm looking for something thats bearely noticable on the open road etc.

Anyone know the best place to get them from? Autobend (the Rage manufacturer) wants $1100 odd, but I've seen them on eBay australia for $420AU = $525NZ. WTF?!? I gave the Autobend guys a hard time about this, and they were more interested in beating up the guy selling them "cheap" than giving me a good price.

I've pondered this before - they're made in NZ yet you can buy them cheaper from Australia?

How much would shipping be? Surely it wouldn't bring the 500 odd up to 1100

I imagine with a muffler in it would quieten it down a lot, personally I would rip the muffler out

are you sure ??

most systems i've seen advertised in AU are $1000-$1500AU.
just a dump pipe cost $250-$350AU.
my locally made press bent 2.5" system (one res and one muffler) was around $700NZ without the dump pipe (which i had to get from AU)

I Run a 3" Rage kit on my 96 (1KZTE) 90 Series, the kit is bolt on. Seems to give it a bit more kick and the temp gauge seems to sit a wee bit lower. I find its a bit noisy when you give it a bit of stick (eg up a hill etc).

RRP is listed at $1143 incl GST, I can do them for $950 incl GST, the Prado one (3 Piece) RRP is listed as $879 incl as a comparison). The 80 Series kit is a 5 piece unit with more bends which might explain the extra cost?

http://www.autobend.co.nz/rage/New%20Si ... oyota.html

There is a bare kit listed (I would need to get a price on that)

Also both are from the dump pipe back.....
70 series prado (KZJ78) and 90 Series Prado (KZJ95)

Maybe that isn't a Rage?

Also they mention dump pipe which I assume to be the elbow off the back of the turbo which merges the wastegate and turbine into one.

Thats the one, and it definately is a Rage, as I emailed the people in OZ about shipping one here, not realising they were rage, and they said "Why don't you just but one from Rage - they are made in NZ"

I have a Subaru water to air intercooler setup here that looks like it will fit perfectly, so that is also part of the plan. 8)

But, but, but..... I live about 5km from the factory that makes them.

Maybe I could get a special deal on ARB airlockers, and sell them back to the Aussies....? Oh, wait, the USA have dibs on that.

i doubt those Scotts Rods exhausts are made by rage. unless rage flicked some off to get rid of them.
i know a few navara guys have them and rage don't make one for them (would have saved me getting parts from AU)

i would snap it up at that price, even if you cop GST and the huge freight bill it will still be half the price of whats here.

Got quoted for a 3 inch system for my Prado SWB (would use a LWB and cut it down) and it was $800 fitted from the rear of the dump back. Considering the dump pipes are the most restrictive part of the std system this seemed a bad move (and cost another 3-400 bucks too).

Emailed pitstop (or was it midas - have to find the email) and they quoted me $870 from the turbo back. I queeried them on the dump pipe and they said yes they would remove it as it was a restriction.

Still havent done it (dollars being in short supply for nonessential bits and pieces) but will probably just go to pitstop (or midas) and get a pyro done at the same time (at least get a sensor fitted pre turbo)

I've pondered that myself.

Wouldn't be a problem at all, just need the right size silicon reducers and a bit of piping

Well, it looks like a Rage, Scotts Rods said it came from Rage, and the guy at Rage said he regularly sells quite a few to a guy in Brisbane (where Scotts rods is).
I guess it could all be a big coincedince
