Re: Wanted or Repair Mitzi starter Ring Gear
It is not usual practice to repair a ring gear, they are replacement items and can be got from the dealership or automotive suppliers and shouldn't break the bank.
Any auto repair shop or engineering shop should be able to change one, anyone with access to a gas set for heating should be able to do it :- to remove old ring gear, first note what side and way the lead in edge is on the old ring gear, the new one must be fitted the same way, hold the flywheel vertical in a vice, cut through the ring gear as far in as you can without cutting into the flywheel material, there will be a step on the flywheel that the ring gear will sit on, now with a cold chisel and hammer strike vertically into the cut and this should break(split) the ring gear, use safety glasses , now lay the flywheel on a firm surface with the step the R/G sits on down, sit the new R/G on three small heat proof blocks make sure R/G is up the right way now evenly heat the R/G going round and round the R/G this will expand the R/G, I get it hot enough so you can just melt a stick of solder on it, don't over heat it, when solder will melt on the R/G you have to act quickly, pick the R/G up with two pair of pliers that you already had ready or heavy weight welding gloves and place over the flywheel, give it a quick spin this determines that it is sitting down correctly now shout yourself a BEER while it cools down.
MAKE THAT HALF A DOZEN BEERS, you done good,
FITZY.

I'm pretty sure MP Auto parts over the hill in Upper Hutt will swap a ring gear for you, they specialise in clutches, flywheels etc and are recommend by quite a few on here
