Re: 70 series gear boxes
they come as a 5 speed, if you stick a 4 speed in it'll be shorter and the driveshaft lengths will have to be altered and you'd have to find a late model 4 speed that has the gearbox mounts for the crossmember, I think the crossmember also has to get shifted for a 4 speed?

Re: 70 series gear boxes
yea i know they come 5 speed was just thinking if i changed it to 4 speed id get lower gearing witch would make it better threw the bogs and hill climbs so thats why i was asking what would be better
Re: 70 series gear boxes
Can you get a 4sp for a 70#
. unless the early 4sp can be fitted. I am not sure if there is a ratio change between the 4sp and 5sp , If not 4th gear in both box's is direct drive and 5th gear is over driven called over drive,
SO I WOULD GO THE FIVE SPEED,
FITZY.

Re: 70 series gear boxes
the h55f 5 speed gearbox is just the 4 speed h41(i think) with a 5th gear in another case between the gearbox and transfer.transfer ratios are the same .gearbox clusters differ between diesel and petrol boxs but i think the ratios are about the same still.hope this helps cheers sig

Re: 70 series gear boxes
marks adapters site state that a early 4 speed had 4.92;1 then LC moved to 4.84;1 for most boxes and then moved to 4.08;1
the link is here
http://www.marks4wd.com/misc_info/trans ... andCruiser
so unless you have a modern gear box its not worth the hassle to get 0.08 change in ratio
good luck with the build
buy the way would you be interested in selling your window wiper motor and heater motor unit?? Im after the 12 volt units due to repowering my truck with SB chev and changing the electrics to 12 volt from 24v
cheers Rohan
