Changed the rear springs on my Hilux this afternoon. That went well - stuck axle stands just in front of rear springs. Same deal for the front? Just behind the leaf pins? Or is the engine weight going to make that a bit unstable?
Can work it out for myself tomorrow, but just wondering what everyone else does
Where to put stands to work on front springs
Re: Where to put stands to work on front springs

Re: Where to put stands to work on front springs
Thats how I did my 87 lux axle stands just behind the rear hangers on the front spring (sounds wrong when you read it I know) where the chassis is parrallel to the ground, but then I put another load of packers (big arse chunks of flat wood) under the front by the cross member and put the wheels/tyres in the rear on the tailgate to add more weight back there.
Make sure you are on solid level ground (concrete or use big pads to spread the load if on gravel), that everything is stable and dont climb underneath unless you have to. If you go underneath make sure you are safe, have someone there to help or watch just in case.
If it rocks and moves when you lean on it or bump it rethink the method you are using. You may have to use a BFH and dont want to knock it off the stands.

Re: Where to put stands to work on front springs
Rest assured - I am always overcatious when even putting an arm under a jacked up vehicle (and by jack I mean jackstands, plus the wheels I've taken off also under there just in case). Heard a story once (from a older guy at work who is full of unbelieveable stories that always turn out to be true) about a guy who was changing the oil in a hilman hunter or something and his jack gave out on him. Apparently he was stuck under the car with the drain plug piercing his skin and pinning his head to the ground waiting for hours for his wife to come home. The tyres were still on, so it didn't fall far enough to crush his skull, but I tend to wonder whether being pinned under a hillman for several hours to reflect on your poor choice of vehicle support might be a humiliation worse than death.
I'll give the original plan a go, and I'll give it a bit of a jiggle to see how solid it is before I reach under to undo the bolts. I wish I had taller stands though cos I can't leave the wheels on to see how steady it is as they sag down to the ground on the springs at the top height of the stands.

Re: Where to put stands to work on front springs
used a steel tressle under the rear bar work to hold the safari up when changing diff , should of used it for the front when putting the lift in, swb pivoted on the axle stands with the weight of the engine
