80 Series Auto Trans Playing Up and Trans Not as per Code

Post by suzolla »

Have got a 91 80 Series, done 313,000 kms
Over the last couple of days the auto had started to play up a bit, sometimes not upshifting unless i manually shift it and then some times in 3rd completely losing drive untill I shift it up and down. Checked the level and it was full.
So decided today to do a filter and fluid change.
Check the firewall plate to check what trans it had. Said A442F.
So rang up for some prices for a trans filter kit.
Ripco $148 will have to get in
BNT $80.30 1 in stock
Supercheap $80.30 will have to get in
Waikato Toyota, don't have a price as don't stock in NZ.

So went to get the one for BNT. Kit was labelled A442F
Got home, drained the fluid, took the pan off compared the 2 filters, quite different so couldn't put new one on so as it was already drained and pan off decided to just clean it and then refit and new fluid. Before fitting the filter drew the shape of it for future reference.

Took it for a test run, much better, so took filter kit back to BNT to see what the story was, checked in their filter kit book and found that it appears that I have a A440F not a A442F as it says on the firewall. Will fit a new filter when i do another fluid change, new filter has a gasket whereas mine didn't have one.

Just a bit of info for those of ou with 80's autos. I couldn't see any obvious makings on the box.

Cheers
Tim
