Repower for a Toyota 3L

Hi there,

I have 4wd Hiace with a buggered engine and so am looking for some help on what my best options would be to get it up and going again.

Dual mass flywheel is buggered, and when my mech was taking that out he found a whole bunch of play in the crank shaft. Apparently the thrust bearings went a while back and the crank shaft has been chewing the engine block

Anyway, what cost effective, but good options would I have to repower? There are plenty of secondhand or reconditioned 3L's around, and this seems like the easiest option, but parts and labour add up pretty quick when I am not able to do it myself. Van is probably worth 8 grand, and talking with current mechanic it is heading towards that amount of $$ ($1400 for clutch kit and dual flywheel, $4000 for reconditioned engine + more $$ for other bits + labour)

Anyone able to tell me
-Who is good to talk to about getting a repower done in Chch?
-Who is reliable to get a reconditioned or second hand engine off at a good price? I dont want to go to the trouble of repowering only to have to do it again in a while.
-Should I just drop a 3L in there or are there other decent options?

Any other suggestions welcomed!! This was a nasty shock and we need to get our van up and running again!

Had a chat to Kaiapoi Repowers, and they can jam a reconditioned 3L in there fitted for $3650 + GST

Anyone know the quality of the work these guys do and how good a reconditioned engine is likely to be through them?

I will give J3 a bell too, see what they can do.

didn't think the 3L's came with dual mass, mayby the 1kz (ie 3 litre) motor.

These guys work is very good, have heard nothing but good things about them. And the price is pretty sharp to.

If you can ditch the dual mass and get a single (cheaper anyway) mass. Did that with my prado.

Thanks for the replies. Definitely a dual mass flywheel, and will be replacing with single mass. Apparently the imports with 3L's quite often had these.

Is looking like Kaiapoi Repowers with a reconditioned engine might be the option I try.
