kzj71 1kz-te

Post by spankey666 »

Hi all, i have a problem with my prado which has me completly baffled and i am hoping someone far wiser than myself can offer some help... :D
Scenario.....:
starts and runs sweet, (glow plug light stays on though)
after aprox 1 mile the engine cuts out . restarts fine then cuts out. etc.
have bridged ecu fault connectors and no faults show.
But on one occasion, a fault was showing, half way through counting the flashes the relays under the bonnet all went crazy and the ecu read no faults ?? as the engine is dying, the same relays and the fuel spill solonoid all click like mad.
some times on trying to restart with the ecu fault socket bridged, i turn the key to on, after an initial click of one of the relays (dash lights all lit , and ecu light on perminently) it wont start, other times after you turn on the key after a few seconds a relay clicks and the engine management light blinks at a constant rate, and it fires up perfect......
so a dodgy relay or connector suspected. it would seem that as it dyes, the permenant supply to the ecu fails wiping out any error codes, also as its dying the glow plug light goes out .
the trouble is i cannot find any documentation on the net as to where all the relays are, or what the visible ones do. i cannot even find the ecu, its not behind the glove box as expected.
can any one shed some light on this or point me in the right direction ???
Thanks in advance

Check you battery terminals, and fuseable links.
Had a similar problem and the terminals were corroded on the inside.

Do you have a Turbo Timer, or any Car Alarms fitted?

Read recently on another forum a guy was having similar problems as you, turned out he had a dodgy relay in with the main fuses under the bonnet http://toyotasurf.asn.au/forum/viewtopic.php?t=24762

Thanks for the quick replies.
i have checked the battery terminals, all seems good. have disconnected every visible plug under the bonnet and checked for corrosion. tonight ive checked the fuse box (in drivers foot well) and cannot find anything wrong.

it does not have an alarm or turbo timer (unless they're factory standard which i am unaware of )

sounds like the same problem, my main problem is that this is a jap import, kz71 with the 1kz engine, it doesnt have a fuse box under the bonnet, and none of the schematics ive seen on the net equate to the layout of relays on this model. :?

There are a bunch of relays inside the L/H gaurd near the batteries.

I have a manual which should cover your model... Its 40MB
(Use it for my LWB KZJ78)

The link is

http://daemon4x4.org/portal/downloads.p ... =17&p=3Its halfway down page titled,
Land Cruiser KZJ 70 Series II - 1KZ-T Engine

thanks for all of your help,
kbushnz, alas the manual differs quite a lot from my model :(
i have managed to source the problem, it turned out to be a capacitor on the ECU had spewed its guts over the circuit board, corroding and causing flash over........ fresh capacitor, clean all the carbon off, re-laquer affected area and jobs a good un.. :) problem solved..

Great news.!
I have heard that the caps in many ECU's (Not just Toyota) will have the tendency to pop after about ten years....

Must remember that one....
