Aussie lokka/detroit locker pins wanted

Post by albundy »

Yep, broke the lokka, who would have thought   After all four, yes all four pins and springs. Been to the local shops, no go and they can't get a hold of the lone supplier up nth. Tried him myself =no answer. Anyone know 4wdbeyond?

If anyone has any sitting around, I would appreciate it. Seems they are all one size. Measured some in a shop this afternoon and plenty of broken one there as well, they are all 16.7mm long and 6.33mm to 6.37 mm in diameter. if anyone is in a shop anywhere and if you think about it, can ya ask if they have any :D

Got to fix it before Chasm trip planned next weekend. :x

I was one short when I put mine in so used the end of a 6.3mm drill bit ;)

Dunno how well that would work doing it on all 4 - one would assume they would do the same job?

hey pal.

Probably worked this out already but thats 1/4" diameter.

I'd suggest getting a machine shop to order some material and make you some- you could probably even get them to make the pins out of a harder or less brittle material to stop breakages.

If there is a serious problem with sourcing these pins- and if they are all of similar diameter these pins go into- I could possibly help with supplying them (fitter turner- always looking for ways to make a little extra) it just depends on if its worthwhile.

Get some made and have a few spares. Probably cheaper then getting the original ones anyway.

Use drill bits. Buy the right size and chop off the fluted, drilling part. We have used this trick before with pretty good succes

Yeah, Rick was saying that but to use 7mm, it didn't fit the hole. Can you get a 6.3 mm drill bit????? Do you use the stainless drill bits rock, what they like to cut...hard I suppose?

Give George Henry (0800 331 033) a ring.... if you can get a drill bit that size they will know as for cutting.... just put a cut off wheel in ya disc grinder & cut real slow so it dont heat up too much, then tidy up the corners on ya bench grinder then a stone to make it real smooth.

Found a shop that will sell me a length of steel dowel 1/4" thick a metre long. Spares for Africa. Rick said he can give me a spring to replaced the stuffed one, thanks Rick. All good. Be up and running tomorrow with any luck.

Hi,
Yes it is easy enough to buy 1/4" bright steel rod but if it is just mild steel it may not be strong enough for its duty, are the original ones hard or soft. Even the shank of a drill bit is relatively soft.

Also do you know if the parts are the same as the Lockright ones as I have a couple of complete repair kits, pins and springs.

Cheers
Tim

PM sent Trev.
Got to recommend Beyond 4x4. Alan got me what I wanted, discussed some technical issues, sent me a copy of the instructions (I lost the originals), and had it on the overnight couriers before I even had the $$$ in his account. top Bloke IMHO.
Got an excuse to go for a drive on Sunday now....test drive that is

Did you break a front or rear AL? What size tyres are you running?
Ive been looking at geting one of these, just wondering if theyre worth the hassle if theyre bad for breaking pins?

Front, they don't make a rear for patrol/safari. It wasn't the product, it had been in there four years, and has had some very hard use. The wear from this use just increased the clearances out of tolerance. Lesson, reset the clearances every two yeras or so. I would not blame the lokka for the issue. The lokka has been one of the best mod I did to the old girl.
